SAFETY ALERT: Bow Seating Hazard (Malibu)

My SeaSwirl 21 DC has seating for 3 adults in the bow. However, if you put two adults in the bow, very occasionally when you hit a wave just right, the bow will catch (not cut) the wave and lurch left or right. It could cause the driver to fall, if he is standing. If the bow seating is empty...

Steering cable wont bend enough to come out of outboard

Gee, what part of the steering cable did you clean? The center part is usually well sealed, and the ends are easy to lubricate, without removal of the steering cable.

    1999 Mercury 40 hp 2 stroke Overheat

As long as all cylinders are within 10% of each other, the actual compression value is not important. Put a torque wrench on the head bolts and see that they are tight. A couple of things, in case you do not know. Mercs will overheat at idle if the impeller is chewed up on it's bottom...

    1999 Mercury 40 hp 2 stroke Overheat

Compression leak can cause overheat, however, that usually occurs at high RPM. It still makes sense to take a compression test.

Staying warm on boat in the winter

If you want to add heat to the boat permanently, it can be pretty easy to rig up. Go to a junkyard and get a heater core from some junked auto. Build a wooden box to hold a 12VDC fan and the heater core. You will need some sort of decorative gratings to let the heat out and air in. Install...

    Impeller replaced

The seal in the water pump output? They come with some of the impeller rebuild kits. I am not sure I ever actually replaced one directly, as they come installed in new pump covers.

    18 hp Johnson no spark

Gee, my newish digital multimeter has a capacitor test setting it reads in micro farads. A condenser used on magneto systems should be about .25 micro farads. My old (1950s/60s) multimeter could be roughly used to test a condenser. You set it to resistance and touch the leads to the condenser...

    18 hp Johnson no spark

Condensers absorb the voltage when the points open, lessening the chance of arcing. This voltage is immediately dumped back into the ign coil, helping to induce spark. If the condensers are bad, you will have no spark. They can be tested on modern digital multimeters, and roughly, on analog...

    Impeller replaced

On the OP's motor, the thermostats need to open before a telltale can occur. In cold weather, with a flusher device, it may not ever open at idle speed. You need to look at the gratings above the Anti ventilation plate and the prop hub for water to emerge.

    Impeller replaced

You should be able to manipulate the gearcase and move the plastic tube over the copper tube. Once you have got the copper tube in the plastic one, which is still in the water pump cover, you can push the gearcase into position and wiggle it home. Remember you need to grease and align the...

    anti-freeze amount

Of course, us ocean types call "blue water" the ocean water offshore, where the Tuna live. I think raw water cooled is descriptive enough, however, fresh water cooled could use a name change to help with confusion.

    Impeller replaced

The plastic extension tube must be put in the pump housing, to line up the water tube, unless you have really really long, thin fingers.... Although it takes the thermostats to open before you have a telltale, and this may never happen on the flusher in cold weather, water should emerge from...

Out to lunch Gear Oil Prices

Gee, better to change it too often, than not often enough. After each season is a good interval. I asked a friend of mine when he last changed the gear oil in his merc 850. His reply was "What gear oil?". We came home in reverse that day, as forward wouldn't engage. That gearcase had many...

    1999 Force/Merc 75HP 3 Cylinder 2-Stoke Rough Running Issues

Just so you know, 2000RPM is about where the idle jets stop providing any significant fuel, and the mains take over completely. If it were me, I would pull the bowl off and clean the emulsion tube from below, and hopefully that will get the passages under the welch plug. I have not worked on...

Normally props have a thrust washer under the prop to keep it from hitting the gearcase. It appears that you need one.

Gee, If you dislike the price of your favorite gear oil, give Wallyworld the $6.96 for the SuperTech marine gear oil and move on. It will work just fine.

Out to lunch Gear Oil Prices

Gee, I used the Wallyworld stuff in my gearcases for years. I bought a gallon of synthetic blend gear oil on Amazon last year, for $30, just so I would have it on hand.

HOW TO FILL POWER TRIM ON 1982 50HP MARINER NO RESIVOR ON PUMP INSIDE OF BOAT CYLINDERS ON EACH SIDE OF MOTOR

If the pump is like the picture in post #7, the pump is self-bleeding. just fill it with ATF or 5W-30 motor oil, whatever it already has in it. The trim cylinders are not self-bleeding, however. Give a pull on the gearcase and see if she moves a bit. If so, they must be bled.
