    VP 5.7 Gi Throttle Surging

could be a lot of things, noticed you did not mention replacing any ignition parts - plugs, wires, cap/rotor, check/set timing, fuel filters, etc... best option for checking fuel injection system is to use a proper diagnostic tool/program. guessing and changing parts at random gets expensive

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL will crank, but won't run after overheat

check fuel pump pressure and check for voltage at the pump harness. possible its getting voltage during cranking but oil pressure switch/wiring may be faulty/melted from overheat check for spark with a spark tester at the coil/plug wire ends

Engine coupler or dog clutch or something else

may be that the hub spun in the engine coupler. if you can mark the rubber hub and the outer steel area then run the boat and see if the marks are no longer lined up

Engine coupler or dog clutch or something else

clutch dog - not likely engine coupler - possibly something else - perhaps did the white smoke have a burnt rubber smell to it?

    1986 Mercruiser V-8 5.7L - overheating issue??

    1. that's good but does not mean sufficient flow 2. did they replace just the impeller or whole housing/kit AND the base assy? 3. possible but if it's operating most likely you got it right, the retainer should fit into the housing receptacle it's mounted to, also feel free to use gasket sealer...

Cone clutch replacement, slight wear on gears, mech is going to flip?

that much i understand, however if the mechanic is that concerned about wear on the mating surface then why not recommend replacing the gearset?

Cone clutch replacement, slight wear on gears, mech is going to flip?

i don't see any reason why that wouldn't work. personally i don't understand your mechanic's logic and i would leave the gearset as is if you are truly skeptical you could leave the gearset as is, buy opposite rotation props and change the throw of the remote so REV becomes FWD and vice versa

Cross reference mercruiser V belt part# to auto parts store?

you don't have to, pretty easy to measure a belt. just use a tape measure, mark the belt in one spot and measure "around" it. hold the tape against the belt as you go around the belt to the mark note the measurement and ask for a v-belt close to the measurement. if no exact belt comes up buy...

    Mercruiser 5.0 shifting issue

because there is no load on the prop when the boat is out of the water. like SD says, adjust the cable(s) and if that does not alleviate the issue it's time to replace the lower cable quick answer or not, the alpha lower shift cable is something that will need replacing at some point

    Mercruiser 3 button trim switch

one solenoid system uses the solenoid for only the "up/out" circuit (blue). gravity/fwd prop force allows the motor ease when tilting/trimming "down/in" hence no "down" (green) solenoid

Location of freshwater exit for Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen when on muffs

mercruiser sterndrives do not have mufflers, there should be an exhaust bellows attached to the gimbal housing exhaust flange and the bell housing exhaust flange. it's possible someone installed the bravo style exhaust tube? in any case, running the engine with the drive at a 45 degree angle is...

    Outdrive leak

you would also have to somehow cover the driveshaft opening in the upper housing to do so independent of the lower i test the lower first, install the seal at the lube passage opening and clamp a putty knife over it with a needle nose vise grip. once the lower passes the pressure test, i...

7.4L MPI Intermittant Loud suck noise then stalls Hot or cold

definitely swap, if the other engine is sound then you have a fully stocked parts room right in your bilge. no need to waste money guessing the problem as enfield noted you should use a diagnostic tool to verify engine data/faults, otherwise is mostly guesswork when was the last full tune up?
