What would cause my FSK16 to not be propelled by my Johnson JW10 3hp?

We used to call them " yank and go"....back in the old days some motors had the start speed at about 3/4 thottle, with a 10 hp outboard at that high of throttle with no neutral....saw more than a few guys get tossed over the transom when that motor roared to life !!

Don't think those little motors have a gear shift..

    Merc 75 4 cylinders, 2 carbs

As a boat owner, you might as well get used to it !! Once you go thru everything and I mean everything, spending will slow down for a little while until you see some new thing you can't live without which then leads to more new things....welcome to the world of boating !!

    Merc 75 4 cylinders, 2 carbs

Agree, whenever I get a motor with an unknown history, I buy a whole water pump kit, replace everything so you know !! Nothing worse than being stuck out on the water or burning up a nice motor because you were to cheap to spend an extra 50 bucks. No one ever claimed boating was a cheap hobby...

    Merc 75 4 cylinders, 2 carbs

Welcome to the boating world, "break out another thousand".. You might try flushing out the cooling system to see if there are any clogs, but...in the long run a new impellor should be the first thing to replace on any motor sitting for a period of time.

What would cause my FSK16 to not be propelled by my Johnson JW10 3hp?

Behind rhe prop is a small drive pin called a shear pin that drives the prop, but if it hits something, the pin shears annd needs replaced. If rhe pin has sheared the prop might go around but no drive to push your boat.

Looking for idea's to hide window screws

I would not use silicone, I hate the stuff, never lasts and once you use it, nothing else will ever stick there again. Many superior sealants today !!

Is my engine mounted low enough?

Oh yes....by all means do look ahead and see where things will fit....

Is my engine mounted low enough?

Interesting mount you have there, not sure I have saw one like that. However that may make the job even easier. Adding a wedge would keep you from drilling more holes, but resealing and getting to the fasteners inside the transom might be a challenge. Rather than moving the wood section down...

How is HP selected on old Elgin Outboards?

Can only recall as a kid, with the cover off I saw 4 big holes and all the adults were talking about a monster size 4 bbl. I knew he complained about all the gas it sucked up.

How is HP selected on old Elgin Outboards?

None that I knew of...I was an avid young boater back then, big motors were 25 hp!! My dad had a 7.5 hp Elgin motor, I was king of the river for a couple years until rhe other kids dads moved up to 10 hp motors !! My uncle bought one of the first 50 hp V4 outboards in the area. That thing was...

Acceptable to use aluminum plate as outboard shim?

Yep...unless replaced in the past few years, that boat needs a new transom !! As a 60 plus year boater, I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the nymber of foljs that said " that transom feels solid..no issues there" only to find them selves in serious trouble shortly after. Working at...

Is my engine mounted low enough?

Yep....didn't notice that before....the tilt pin on the motor should be able to allow it to hang verticle after. Any good woodshop can make a nice uniform angled wedge that would look good !

Is my engine mounted low enough?

Unbolt the wood where the motor mounts and lower that a couple inches, just drill new holes in the wood. If you get into some chop you don't want the water intake to keep popping out of the water.

Add telltale pee hole to 1965 Johnson 75 HP

As an old boater, I enjoyed the pics of your motor, brought back fond memories, willing to bet some boat pics would do the same if you would care to post some. Afterall who doesn't appreaciate looking a cool old boats, especially when they look to be in good condition as yours appears to be in.
