    Need help with transom repair...

Sand off all that grey stuff. Fill the holes, dents etc with marine polyester resin putty. Sand smooth. Sealing with Polyester resin and fiberglass cloth would be best, but considering the age of the transom, several coats of spar urethane would probably work.

    1989 Celebrity 181BR Restoration

Not sure of the advantage of deleting a ski well, as you could make it a live well or fish well for fishing. You should also be able to detect the spot where it was. Maybe your boat was a slightly different model than the one with the ski well.

    1989 Celebrity 181BR Restoration

That grey stuff on the deck looks original. My '88 SeaRay had something that looked the same. Not sure what it is. Perhaps the boat was garage-kept and is in fine shape. That would be an exception. Test the transom on the inside for soft spots, especially down low. Check the motor mounts...

    1989 Celebrity 181BR Restoration

You will want fiberglass cloth and resin over the plywood to protect it. If it is original, I am surprised/shocked that it would hold up this long, without that covering. You might suspect it has been replaced. I would get a gallon of poly resin and some light glass mat, and use that to seal...

    Pettit HRT Premium

More intel on anti slime additives in bottom paints. SR-40 and SR-60 as well as PCA Gold once had Ingarol as their anti slime additive. Ingarol licensing was discontinued in 2015, and existing supplies ran out. Pettit has named successor paints (Odyssey and Odyssey Triton) to both SR-40 and...

    hard to start when warm

What is the engine year and model number? A 20 YO 2 cycle engine would be a 2000 and a 60* looper. Not sure they came in 140HP.

    Pettit HRT Premium

I would think Pettit would have a replacement for it. I believe it was 60% copper plus slime resistant stuff. It could be that it was too toxic. In any case, the West Marine generic for SR40 was PCA Gold. That works pretty good.

    High Voltage

That was the 40A model right? Merc switched to twin 20A VRs after a while. Replacement is simple. They bolt to the block, so it is unclear to me if they were considered water cooled. Does Sierra have anything? Try the ebasicpower web site.

    1999 Johnson T@T Airbound?

Some of those PTT motors have an adaptor or coupling that connects them to the pump. Do you have such a thing?

    Laying the Deck Questions

You likely want your fuel tank fuel pickup in the stern. Otherwise, when you plane with a near empty tank, she will suck air. Also fuel fills are very often in the stern area.

    High Voltage

It is not great for the battery. Starter and trim motors will likely not object. The CDI unit is not connected to the charging system, so that's OK. You should replace it. C/O Sierra and CDI electronics and perhaps GLM for replacement voltage regulators.

    Bass boat resurrection

If you do decide to keep it, you should clean and rebuild the carbs. If they are partially clogged, and you run it, it can run lean and damage the cylinders, rings, pistons... Carb kits are pretty cheap....

    Bad starter?

I suppose that there are carb cleaners that don't clean very well. I think I had a gallon can of a carb soak product that didn't clean anything. However, products like Gumout and Chemtool contain toluene and acetone. Chemtool also contains methanol. Simply add methyl chloride to them and you...

    Bad starter?

Your kidding right? Carb cleaner is designed to dissolve varnish in the carburetor. It is essentially a weak paint remover. Try it on your starter windings and see what it does.

    Trim wiring problems

Another thought on your melting wires. If you are using a 3 wire PTT motor and relays, you may be shorting half the PTT motor windings. 3 wire motors have the common ground in the center of 2 windings. Only one winding is energized at a time, and the other winding is supposed to be open...

    Bad starter?

Carb cleaner has solvents that dissolve varnish. If any of it gets onto starter windings, which are insulated by varnish, it will short out the starter. Wipe the bendix clean without any solvents, and oil it. Make sure starter cables are clean and tight. if motor is older, corrosion can...

    Merc na1601-02 control box wiring

One of those wires is for overheat buzzer. Ground the temp sensor on the block and see which one grounds. (likely tan/blue). One is likely temp gauge, as V6 models had both temp gauge and temp alarm. (tan?) The third wire is likely trim gauge. Some Mercs had the trim sensor, some didn't. If...

    Trim wiring problems

A 3 wire PTT motor uses solenoids. Auto starter solenoids would work, but are not sealed, causing sparks in an area that could have gasoline fumes. Marine solenoids are sealed, and I therefore recommend them. They will be available at most marine stores. The switches on your control...

A guess is that the overheat warning for the motor is sounding. A lot of them are built into the motor control box.

Hook up boat engine to permanent magnet generator.

Larger boats have generator sets for a reason...They use less fuel than running a propulsion motor. They do take up more space, which that why they are usually on 40 footers or larger. Some put the commercial gens on their swim platform. They are air cooled and air ventilated and cheap. That...
