    New motor knocking???

Before you take it all apart there is an air pressure test you can do to determine if the cooling system holds pressure; and also with the boat in the water you can replace the manifold feed hoses with clear hose, and run it till the stat opens, if you see bubbles in the cooling water that’s a...

    1985 OMC 3.8 v6 exhaust manifold questions

Closest I can see is mine are about 11/2" from the bottom edge to the center of the bolt head. Those OMC original manifolds, it looks like they ground the fwd part of them to clear those hydraulic mounts! I'm wondering if you tried the Barr manifolds but ground away just enough cast iron it...

    New motor knocking???

Well it’s hard to say but normally you’d get noise suggesting that but of course it can be tough to track these things down. So I’d put some of that oil in a clear container and let it sit for a day & see if any water settles out. If not it could be assembly lube. These engines (Vortec) also...

    1985 OMC 3.8 v6 exhaust manifold questions

some of these 2 piece manifolds for the 4.3 are thicker on the bottom, which is how the original OMC design was, but some of the aftermarket makes it thinner with more clearance..... sierra...

    New motor knocking???

well that looks like water, I did not use assembly lube when I did my top end overhaul, what I did was just squirt Mobil 1 from my oil can on the cam lobes, lifters, pushrods, etc. Then before starting, I grounded the high tension lead of the coil and cranked it till I saw oil pressure on the...

5.7 1987 OMC shuts off at Low RPM

you see that pic above, video that, when you are shifting from in gear to neutral, then we can see if your esa is sticking on, or not. Shift from in-gear to N, then shift from N to in gear. That will answer that question at least.

5.7 1987 OMC shuts off at Low RPM

OK then have someone watch or even video the shift linkage on the engine when you shift from in gear to neutral in the water, and post it up. Then we can see for sure.

5.7 1987 OMC shuts off at Low RPM

Yes the cable adjustments are made with the drive off, so boat has to be out of the water. Question, does the boat shift into gear easily and shift out of gear easily? If so, you may have more of a tune up issue than a shifting issue. If you can easily shift out of gear to neutral when in the...

    New motor knocking???

Here's what mine looked like. Looking at your engine running, the oil itself doesn't look like it has water in it....but does assembly lube really look like that?

    New motor knocking???

PS: I did a top end overhaul on mine 4 years ago and engine noise was basically the same after the replacement of cylinder heads. What you're calling assembly lube looks like water in the oil....I did a top end overhaul because I had 2 blown head gaskets due to an overheat 3 years prior, the...

    New motor knocking???

The older pre Vortecs had adjustable valve trains but that was changed to a net lash system (not sure of what year that changed) that’s not adjustable. However a defective lifter could still make noise. It also could be a timing chain with too much slack. I’d try removing the SERP belt just...

Help Diagnosing carb vs ignition problem, 5.7 mercruiser

Ok interesting I was following your thread on THT as well. 1) it revs up and holds the higher rpm without dying, so the accell pump is working and main system is likely clear 2) the dying at idle suggests either excessively lean or rich idle setting: a) as recommended the choke should be open or...

Outdrive does not want to re -install in boat

I have a Cobra not an Alpha, so I just R+R it in neutral, but what I have found that helps may apply to the Alpha as well: 1)get a drive jack this helps you get the drive at exactly the right height to get the driveshaft to line up with the coupler...it also REALLY saves your lower back...

5.7 1987 OMC shuts off at Low RPM

With a properly tuned igniton system and clean carburetor the OMC ESA system should not stall the engine. Normally these engines came with a Prestolite points distributor and a Rochester 2bbl or 4bbl carb. Both require maintenance for the engine to run correctly and not stall. The points and...

    Exhaust Bellow

Nothing does. That entire system of the transom mount exhaust housing and the exhaust Y pipe are full of water up to a level about even with the bottom edge of the exhaust manifolds when the boat is in the water. This is called static water line. Also why some engines suffer water ingestion and...
