5.7 Volvo Penta Overheating at Idle

OK then that's good, no leaks, for overheats at idle I'd be looking at the impeller housing itself. One time I sucked up sand and with my Cobra the impeller looked fine but the wear plate was scored and wouldn't pump as well as it should at low speeds. New impeller + wear plate and all good...

4.3 GL-G Squeaking Noise, Please Help

I’d take a pic of how the belt is routed and then start the engine briefly and see if it’s gone. If so then spin each accessory pulley and idler/tensioner to find the cause. An engine stethoscope is very helpful here. Could be the alternator, p/s pump, water circulating pump or even impeller...

4.3L OMC Cobra Conversion From Points To Electronic Ignition

Nice review of the system....by the way did you have to change your ESA module to get it to work with the electronic ignition?

OMC Cobra 5.0 lower unit oil question

Here’s the install of my old ‘88 Cobra as you can see it’s been used in salt water a long time, it will get painted with anti fouling paint before it goes in the water. I think the way you were thinking of connecting that crankcase vent hose is correct...

OMC Cobra 5.0 lower unit oil question

Great and you're welcome! Enjoy and as long as you keep up on the maintenance the Cobra should last. I just re-installed mine yesterday. I pull it off each fall and store it in the garage.

Couple of tips for reinstalling a Cobra drive....

I heard the first run of bellows were too small on the inside and they actually made them bigger to compensate.

Couple of tips for reinstalling a Cobra drive....

OK for those of you who have Cobras and maintain them yourselves....and this is for the dog clutch models 1986-1993....we know that pulling a drive is usually easy but reinstalling one can be difficult, sometimes it goes right on, sometimes it fights you....so here's what I have found helpful...

5.7 Volvo Penta Overheating at Idle

I don’t know what a new one looks like but I’m sure someone here does and can comment.

    1994 5.7L Weber carb

Those symptoms suggest an auto choke not opening up all the way. These have an electric choke and need a constant 12v for it to stay open

Shifting issues related to electrical wiring

Yep I've had one of these Cobras almost 20 years so I am pretty familiar with the shift system. When its set up correctly they shift with 2 fingers, very easily. If your ESA system does not work you can bend parts and stretch shift cables trying to get it into neutral. I pull the drive at the...

5.7 Volvo Penta Overheating at Idle

The water circulation pumps (just a marine version of a standard Chevrolet small block water pump) rarely go bad and when they do the bearing makes noise and you can get a leak from the weep hole located at the underside of the pump. The are pretty cheap and easy to replace. I would first...

5.7 Volvo Penta Overheating at Idle

Ok it is important to know which Volvo system the OP has, there are the Swedish drives (AQ and its variants) and the SX drives (partly based on the OMC Cobra). I'm not familiar with the AQs but on the Cobras and Volvo SX there are a few common points: 1)Plastic water nipple in the transom...

    Motor Knock

I would not be happy with these people at all. If the engine knocks and pulleys were bent it makes you wonder if they bent the crankshaft. Not repairing the stringer? I would NOT have paid the balance if the bill till both were rectified!

Shifting issues related to electrical wiring

Not knowing exactly what you have, I looked up your engine in an online OMC catalog... 1992 OMC Stern Drive 5.7 [574APRAMH] - Parts Lookup - Crowley Marine and it looks like your engine had originally the Prestolite BID electronic system that was used for a few years by OMC and also Volvo. The...

    1985 OMC 3.8 v6 exhaust manifold questions

So to my knowledge both GLM and HGE make a conversion kit for the one piece batwings that were used on your engine for 1985, yours appears to be an '84, due to the log manifolds. Either will work if you want to just buy a whole kit and not have to piece things together. I'm in a salt water...

Cracked block - now looking to replace motor

You MIGHT want to swap the head gaskets to a set of Fel Pro marine gaskets, as well if raw water cooled. I don't know if this is 100% necessary in fresh water but in brackish or salt for sure I'd do it. The '96 and up is the Vortec manifold, no exhaust crossover and 8 bolts to hold down instead...

    1985 OMC 3.8 v6 exhaust manifold questions

So from the pix yours came with the log style manifolds, which to my knowledge were not available in the aftermarket for the V6s, like they were for the V8s.... Here’s my center riser style conversion on my 4.3...Barr aftermarket manifolds and elbows and V/P 90* exhaust pipes and hoses. Measure...

    1985 OMC 3.8 v6 exhaust manifold questions

The odd thing is that some catalogs show the log style for the 1985, some show the one piece "batwing" style for the 1985. If that 3.8 did come with the batwings, then any manifold for the 4.3 should fit, because the batwings were used from 1985/6-->1990 I think, then they changed to a 2 piece...

    1985 OMC 3.8 v6 exhaust manifold questions

1985 OMC Stern Drive 3.8 [384STMRCOM] - Parts Lookup - Crowley Marine I believe these 3.8s were actually Chevrolets, based on the distributor being in the rear vs the 3.8 Buick which OMC also used (but a good bit earlier I think) which had the distributor in the front. To replace those exhaust...
