    Another factor is that older motors ( 2 strokes ) are lighter and easier to maintain.-----Many folks are realizing this.----Older motors often have cheaper parts.----Older motor can be fixed without $100 / hr dealer support !!!----There is a high demand for simplicity when it comes to small motors.

    Special tools are shop " time savers " and not always needed.----Many folks look carefully at the location of a seal.-----Use a correct size socket and push the new seal in.-----Making sure it is square and at the correct depth.

    Stop-----12 volts from the battery is not used to make spark for the plugs.---Mistakes with hot wiring can be expensive.----A factory manual is what is needed here.-

    I do not believe that the 67 Mercury models used stainless shafts.------I think there are a lot more 1967 OMC products still out there working just fine.

    You need a new spring for that pawl.----The red pawl is on the correct side.-----The new spring will be on this side of the metal post.

    Sorry----I can not see or feel your parts.----On a 57 year old motor there is no telling how many hands have had a go at fixing this simple ( to me ) unit.

    Mis-alignment I would say.-----It should turn freely both ways.-------And when you test with forward coil energized propshaft should turn clockwise with some drag.-----And lock up turning counterclockwise.

    In northern areas these motors are not used all that much.---Short season and fresh water.-----But there are always exceptions.----Many folks do realize that these motors are long lasting with proper care.

    It should not be hard to find which cap belongs with which rod !!----And you have to get this correct.-----These rods are FRACTURED when they are made and the cap will only fit on one rod.-----No point starting this motor if rods are not matched.

    I thinks he is talking about the STARTER INTERLOCK ( red plastic ) to prevent cranking with too much throttle.-----And the washer must be in the proper place at the bottom of the main bolt.-----And tab on the bottom of the cup must go into the hole for proper location.----Confirm all of the above.

    Your motor might be old but a new kit is a new kit.-------Just like shop labor.-----You have an old motor but shop time to repair it is all " brand new "-----One reason some shops do not deal with old motors and their owners !
