    I have a 1995 20hp and the factory manual says 150-180 psi. It also notes that if the compression is below 120 psi then there will some serious wear on the engine.

    I dont really think it's clear. Just says to pull the shift shaft out but doesn't outright say to pull the gears first. Shaft looks like this one and is why I have to install the shaft extension on the bottom instead of at the top.

    Anyone else have some input on this cause I would like to get this thing back on the water? I've rebuilt auto engines and transmissions so I'm somewhat mechanically inclined but outboards with the need of specialty tolls is a handicap. Do I need to go to a shop and have then do this for me?

    No, the shift shaft is not straight. The Bay Manufacturing instructions say if the shift shaft has a bend in it then the extension will have to be installed at the lower end. I cant reinstall the shift shaft like here...

    I guess I need to remove the water pump assembly again in order to pull the shift shaft? Does the assembly hold the Shift shaft retainer in place? I'm installing the Bay Manufacturing short shaft to long extension kit. The lower rod in this picture is the shift shaft extension.

    So I need to pull my shift shaft (95-20hp-OG113) and the manual if kind of vague. All it says is to pull it out. I really don't want to damage the boot if it can be salvaged cause it looks to be in good shape. How is the boot held in, is it glued?

    Do you use Loctite on your lower unit bolts?

    I don't have the manual here at work but the parts catalog says to use Loctite 271. That is the red one for permanent installations.
