    There must be a leak.-----Leaking float valves?--Ruptured fuel pump diaphragm?----Bad primer bulb ?---Air leak between bulb and fuel tank , including inside the tank.----All simple for you to check.

    When you buy a used motor you must install a new impeller.-----And possibly the pee hose is plugged.----Test the overheat warning horn too.

    These primer valves are very simple.-----Very reliable.-----Used from 1980 to 2005 on motors from 9.9 to 300 HP.-----Lots of good used ones are around.----See post #5.----Yes the mechanic was correct in his explanation.

    Overheat is a steady alarm.----Low oil alarm should be disconnected if you are mixing 50:1 in the tank. .----Sounds to me there is a fuel restriction / blockage on hoses or inside fuel tank.----Check tank vent as well.----If you just got this motor you did install a new impeller ?

    ???----I said to screw the coupler on and back it off as needed.----Seems clear and simple.----I own more than one of those gearcases.----No need for a manual here to work on one either !

    The coupler on top of shift rod screws down all the way.-----Then back it off as needed to position it.----Simple.

    Did an issue show up suddenly ?----What is your motor doing / not doing?-----Was the lower unit off for water pump work ?-----Is the lower unit full of HI-VIS oil ?

    In North America they used a trim switch on the lower cowling beginning in 89 I believe.----Not sure of the marketing strategy where you are.---And of course many sellers / dealers have put newer decals / hoods on motors.------Pictures of the powerhead ( 4 ) may or may not help with identification.

    Is that an aluminum hull ?----Did boat sink ?----If yes , were the motors looked at after recovery ?----Looks like a proper structural / cosmetic repair might be $10,000 / $15000 At many places I think.-----If you can find a shop with a low overhead that has cheap labor it might be very doable.

    Sounds like the fuse blew again.----Some testing required to determine why the fuse is blowing.-----I refrain from trying to explain electrical stuff.----It can be frustrating to explain fuses and such to a novice from 1000 miles away.

    Check the fuse on the motor.----Near the solenoid.----A 20 amp about 5/8" long inside a rubber boot.----The lower units on these motors are not robust enough to carry the loads.----Use the best ( dealer ) gear oil in there.----Install a new water pump impeller as well.----Test the overheat...

    95 Mercury 40hp elpt crank but no start.

    First thing I would do is a compression test.----Post the numbers here.----Then check for strong spark on each lead.----If those are good then clean carburetors.----Make sure you have a good battery and starter motor.----Install a new water pump impeller before launching the boat.

    I do not believe 12 volts from the battery is needed to generate spark from the coils.

    Help identifying this carburetor.

    Understandable that you get excited about this motor find.----I see a corroded motor that may have a lot of bolts that will break if you try to do needed maintenance.----Evaluate this motor before spending a lot of $$$ on it.
