    Yes, your mechanic is correct on all counts. Ignition on should be 12v to the purple wire. Do your gauges work? If so check your dead man switch. If not check ignition switch. Otherwise you'll need to find where you lose power along the purple wire.

    Not quite. The oil pressure switch has nothing to do with the oil pressure sender (gauge).

    I couldn't find that serial number...what's the engine behind it? Otherwise you can either remove the top cover and count teeth (if there are any left) or count the number of input shaft rotations/prop rotations (again, not with a broken drive)

    The SEI drives are available in different gear ratios. If it's going behind a v-8 you're generally going to want a 1.5 or possibly a 1.65

    No, solenoid can still be bad. It has 2 functions, first to engage Bendix and second to connect the battery voltage to the windings.

    I think you're saying just power the field coil lug directly, but does it matter? If 12v is getting to the solenoid and the Bendix is engaging, then either the solenoid is bad or the motor is bad. Either way starter needs to come out unless I'm missing something.

    The exact idle mixture is determined by your carb, and your boat. Regardless, idle mix isn't affecting your running problems once you get going
