Is my outdrive alpha one gen one? and How can I test a used outdrive?

Looks like a gen1. Yes drain the oil to pressure test. Turn the input shaft, make sure it turns smoothly, gears shift easily. Pop top cap to check the gears. Check gear oil. Pressure test. that's about all you can do. Also, the bushings on your trim rams are installed backwards

Mercruiser 3.7 (470) wont turn all the way

Also, remove the pushrod and make sure it isn't bent

Mercruiser 3.7 (470) wont turn all the way

Yes Yes, although i don't recall any of us on here in "the 470 club" blowing a hg. And in the grand scheme of engine repair that isn't a huge deal. Wondering how the open bore would have fared with an aluminum head Yes, but plenty of reserve with the 4" Yup. I also never had to do the cam...

Mercruiser 3.7 (470) wont turn all the way

Needed a rebuild, and thought that a newer powerplant with with (allegedly) 50+ hp made more sense. Plus I'm a glutton for punishment. It's more powerful mid range, and much smoother (again mid range), and overall a better engine, but the 3.7 performs very well and is easier to work on/more...

    Mercruiser ECM replacement?

Seems that these no longer supported, limited run merc special EFI systems, when they break, are far more trouble to repair/diagnose than a simple carb. I'd love to see a marinized but otherwise off the shelf gm system in there instead.

Mercruiser 3.7 (470) wont turn all the way

Horrible advice. The engines, if maintained, are fine. And the power is closer to a V6 than a 3.0

Mercruiser 3.7 (470) wont turn all the way

That's what I'm thinking. More likely than rings that hang only at a certain point imo... Also common failure point to leak from the reservoir back into the #4 exhaust valve

Mercruiser 3.7 (470) wont turn all the way

You've taken the plugs out? Whoops, saw you did. How do you know the valves aren't stuck?

Found a snake skin in the boat. Now what?

Presumably the OP was killed by the snake, since they haven't updated in 3 months.

    Merc 470 no crank

Guess I'm not seeing where the increased current draw would come from, and why it would go through the key switch. Looks like in either drawing you have the bypass wire in parallel with the starter wire(s), so should be less current through it than the others. And your mention of the "starter...

Timing pulley hits the chain cover

What's the timing pulley? Got a pic of what you're talking about?

    Merc 470 no crank

Oh yeah 🤦 Although it actually looks like it would just keep cranking the starter when the ignition was on? ("STR" terminal)

    Merc 470 no crank

I meant the terminal coming off the solenoid to the starter.

    Merc 470 no crank

I wonder what the advantage is of doing it this way rather than just tapping off the 12v terminal supplying the starter.

    Merc. 5.7 Repower wiring

Not sure what relay you got or what wire you're talking about. Standard 5 terminal relay you just don't use the 87a terminal. You can solder the wires together, just limit current to whatever the smallest wire can handle. For the relay, terminals 87 and 30 are connected when energized, so one of...

    Will carport help mold/mildew issues?

I store mine with a simple cover with the sides partially open. I can get some rain spray in there i guess if it's really blowing, but nothing significant. Never had an issue with mildew.
