Should I keep the Volvo 280?

IF??? you own a boat then you should get towing insurance. The Volvo 280 and all the others are probably the best drives there is. Worked at a Bayliner dealership in the 80's to mid 90's They showed a test done with the Volvo, Mercruiser and OMC Hooked the drives to a 350 Chevy and started...

Volvo Penta 5.7Gi Closed Cooling Question

Yes. You can try to remove the hose on the end of the riser the passages might be closed off?? Looks can be deceiving :( Called to work on a 86 Volvo 4cyl. over heating. I started checking things out, the manifold looked brand new, all shiny and new. The first touch poked a hole in the top of...

U Joint Replacement Quality (Made in China)

Not all Chinese products are crap, after all General Motors thinks they're good enough to make the Cadillac cars :( Then there are the HUNDREDS of products that are CRAP!!! Bought a new boat in 1988 the trailer was made in the US the components were made here. The springs lasted almost 24...

    Force 125 lacking power

Starting fluid/quick start test. Start motor and spray the SF around the intake side of the motor. Spray at the base of the carb and around the back to the port covers on the stbd. side. Then if that makes the motor run different, stutter, cough stall? Then the motors sucking air. Since it...

Street Fire Ignition controller instead of Magnapower II

The change to a regular auto coil works well. Search these old posts and you should find out how to do it. I think Nordin has experience with that change. FrankA(RIP) put up some info a few years ago on the change.

Volvo Penta 5.7Gi Closed Cooling Question

I'm guessing it's a used boat? Salt water/fresh water? The 5.7GI (any more #s) could be anywhere from 1995 to 2021 Always add the year and the rest of the model#. Is it a factory cooling system? Manifolds cooled? or just the block? If the boats a 95 then I'd pull the big hose off the riser and...

    Force 125 lacking power

Snake camera, depending on your camera(I have Android)in the US they can be gotten for 12$ Look on ebay and get the one with the stiff lead. Blockage in the exhaust: test: Remove the lower unit, get a snake camera and look up inside the exhaust. I'd be REALLLLY surprised if that was the...

    Force 125 lacking power

Reeds: If the reeds are bad they will let gas come back through out the front of the carb. When you pump the ball to prime the motor, does the ball get hard? I know you changed the diaphragm but it could have gone bad??

Force 120 hp trouble whith tilt/trim

The only thing to do would be is to change the o-ring. Have you tried it after it's back together? Was there a metal ID tag on the pump anywhere? If so, that tag has the model # and you can order parts from that tag. You have the model/serial# for the motor? That also can help with ordering parts.

1995 90HP Force Outboard Fuel Starvation

Early in the post you said "Also while on the water at full throttle it will sometimes grab RPMs and fully accelerate so I don't believe there is an issue internally as once at full RPMs it will continue to run smooth until throttled down" This leads me to believe the ignition system has a...

Volvo Penta Controls for a Trophy 2359???

The throttle cable should be close to the same size. The shift cable, add 4-5ft. You can always hide the extra cable but they won't strech the 3 extra inches if too short. 1-2 long won't hurt anything. Changed throttle/shift(wore out) cables on a 21ft. The were 10ft. too long. They worked ok...

    Seized outdrive

You'll need special tools to rebuild. Put it back together and run it. Might last 20min. or 2 years?? Just make sure you pressure test the drive.

    Help please

The Volvo is the BEST drive out there. Your Volvo is a good one but VERY expensive to fix. One test: walk past the drive and push it to the left and right. If it travels more than 1/4-1/2 in. That repair can cost 1-2K I love Volvo's had 4 but I wouldn't buy one that old. Good luck. Get a newer...

    Will it work??

The best way to ask this question is explain what year/model/ hp they were hooked to?? Is one a duo-prop?

    Intermediate bearing?

No. The older Volvo's had 1-2 bearings depending on the motor. Sounds like the gimbal is bad.

Force 120 hp trouble whith tilt/trim

I hope it goes back together. Usually there's nothing in the pump that can be fixed, the only thing is a can of spray cleaner and compressed air. A piece of dirt, smaller than a pin head can make the pump malfunction. A flat spot on an o-ring or a wear spot can cause problems. Had a problem...

Thanks to Jerry Jerry for all of his advice. Merry Christmas

You said: I have also created an own "used part stock", have worked with these engines for over 20 years. Have collected a lot of parts, maybe to many!!! Yes I know the feeling of too many parts. I moved a couple years ago and the amount of stuff I sold to the scrap yard was unreal. Happy New...
