    if never done.. a reseal job can be a challenge I woud do a pressure test if you can (used soapy water spray) to see if you have bad seals. otherwise new nylon washers may... solve the problem check the small shifter (phipps) screw for leaks on my last reseal of a 5.5 I used...

    great kicker for trolling and emergency back-up to modern technology :) but... I replaced it with even better gas guzzling wise anyway a nice Merc single cyl. 4hp :-)

    I would use paper gasket material easy to cut with an exacto knife and hole punch. you can try thin cork... no harm in trying

    carb jobs are mostly cleaning out obstructions like dried gas, sticky needles so if you do not break the gasket reassembly is usually satisfactory. it certainly seems that fuel is flowing ... if not to much... check the float... enricher

    remove the gc & spin the drive shaft in the bucket of water .... make certain water gushes out of the impeller housing... if ok work top side reinstall GC align the water tube if not.... check for water restriction into the GC water intake cavity below the impeller housing

    exhaust or steam ...check pH temps with infrared scanner (cheap tool to have) pull the thermostast check passages visually for blockages. pull the cyl head check /clean water jackets for blocage replace cyl head gasket

    I have never taken one of these modern.... GC apart but if the shift rod end is not worn it seems to be the only part controlling the shift cam/plunger to move frwd and reverse gears. maybe the cam is worn surely someone here has taken on apart ? Can the shift rod be pulled out...

    How do you test a lower unit for leaks.

    above suggested Danbar video pressure tester works great and not to expensive. I tested both pressure and vacum on my 75 ETEC GC and small engines from 1950-60s trick is to find the GC fitting to fit the hose and GC I used this one...comes with the proper adapters...
