    Hard starting

Gee, you replaced head gaskets, before cleaning the carbs? Why was that? Lack of a functioning choke and dirty carbs would be first check, I would think.

    Overheating issue.

Also, a lot of those motors had water temp gauges and oil pressure gauges, and a separate warning buzzer for overheat and no oil pressure. These two sensors share the horn. If your turn the key on and do not start the engine, the no oil pressure buzzer will sound after a few seconds. That is...

    Overheating issue.

Clogged exhaust manifolds and risers can cause overheat. When were they last changed? In salt water they last 8-10 years. In fresh water a lot longer, but your motor is 34 years old.

    Optimax primer bulb location/orientation

The orientation of the primer bulb makes no difference. There is a valve that opens to allow fuel to bypass the starting fuel pump. Maybe it is stuck, starving the motor of fuel?

    V4TL-13A Compression Validation

Are those the correct spark plugs? I though they were all J4C Champions. Remember to disconnect the electric cables to the gearcase, before dropping it.

    Spun Prop

Yes, pin drive props can spin. The rubber hub goes bad. A lot of those motors had brass pins, however, that makes no difference to your issue. Make sure she is running on both cylinders. The spark plugs should look about the same, if both are firing.

    No core floor

Gee, if you don't pull the cap, how will you fasten the new deck to the stringers? In boats, if it is not fastened real well, it will move. My rule of thumb is that if a nail works on land, use a screw on a boat. If a screw works on land, use a bolt and locknut on a boat.

Advice on a 4 winns restoration

If that is the good stuff, what is the bad stuff? Put a sander on it and then vacuum and see what it looks like. It needs to be clean and solid, with no rotted pieces and mildew.

    No core floor

If you do not plan to walk on the deck, foam it up flush with the stringers (actually, do this no matter what your plans are), and lay a couple of layers of 1.5 oz mat over it. If you plan to walk on the deck, I do not understand your design constraint.

    No core floor

Balsa Core is used to save weight. IMO it's strength in not the factor. I would recommend dry 1/2" pressure treated CDX plywood. Cover it with at least one layer of 1.5 oz fiberglass mat. The plywood gives the strength and the glass waterproofs it. Solid fiberglass will be real heavy, as it...

    V4TL-13A Compression Validation

That is a 50 year old motor. Run it as is. It is just out of spec for even compression.

    06' Merc Optimax ?

The Optimax motors had a design change early on. After that they stayed pretty much the same. You might look on the crowleymarine web site at the different years and see if you can find the year it changed. Alternatively you can look in a service manual and see the changes in maintenance.

    Ignition issue

What does the troubleshooting on CDI electronics web site say? That motor has 1 stator, 2 switchboxes and 3 triggers. Switchboxes provide spark for cylinders 1,3,5 and 2,4,6 respectively. Maybe a trigger is bad?

    How to install flywheel

Easy stuff. Remove the spark plugs. Turn the crankshaft until the top piston is at top dead center(TDC). A screwdriver is sufficient to test for TDC. Put the flywheel over the hub and turn it until the timing mark indicates TDC. Install the bolts, with blue locktite.

Advice on a 4 winns restoration

I like pressure treated plywood for the deck and PT solid lumber for the stringers. As for the deck, there are multiple penetrations thru the deck for mounting seats, tables and other stuff. These often leak, despite the use of sealants. The PT plywood simply holds up better to rot. As for...

Electric conversion of 20' Malibu Euro f3

What is charge time for that battery pack? According to your estimates, max range is 28 mi for those of us in the US, and speed is 25MPH. The range may be inadequate for skiing, and speed is too low for slalom skiing, which is what the boat is designed for. is there a practical way to get...

    Hole shot, or up easy?

The majority of the fuel burned happens at planning speed, because that is where the majority of the boating time is spent. The amount of fuel burnt getting on plane is small compared to that. The strain on the engine when getting plane is quite high. So I recommend planning very quickly when...

BRP reveals a new style of outboard, Rotax powered, horizontal crankshaft....

If I ran that motor on a 'toon here in Barnegat Bay, it would take a lot of saltwater pounding on the engine casing. Any idea if it would stand up to it? My neighbor had the front, underside 1/8" alum panel on his 'toon, peeled back by the waves. He doesn't even go out when it is rough.

New Tachometer isn’t working, possible causes?

The tach runs off the pulsing signal from the stator wires from under the flywheel. You should test the yellow stator wire disconnected from the rectifier, and see if you get any voltage. I would recommend testing high AC voltage range and reducing the scale. Any reading is likely fine. as...

Advice on a 4 winns restoration

A 4.3LX engine would be a good choice. I would expect about 40MPH at full throttle, and reasonable planning time with 4 people. A 5.0L motor would not be overkill, and may not extend the current doghouse, although it will likely need to be wider. Remanufactured engines should be plentiful...
