    New 150 HP Sea Pro

OK, so motor is IL4, 3.0L, 4 cycle and 455 pounds. So 2 less cylinders than my 150HP 2.0L 2 cycle V6, and about 100 pounds heavier. Looks to be Mercury's answer to the real popular Yamaha IL4 150HP outboard. Those seem to be taking over, at least around here. The marketing is comical. That...

1974 850 mercury tilt cylinder leaking,

Mercury used to sell a seal kit for the trim cylinders. The piston seal was teflon and required a special tool to install the piston and new seal into the cylinder. The rest of the seals were orings. If she is leaking around the trim rod, pull the end cap, pull the piston and cylinder out as...

    1994 Ranger boat w/ 150 xri mercury.

If it is inside the control, you need an exact replacement, so it will fit. Look on crowleymarine for the control that you have, by year, and get the ign switch part number. If on the dashboard, most any marine magneto-type switch will work.

Mercury sportjet 175 xr2 rectifier problem

What year motor? Different years had different charging systems. Some had rectifiers, some had voltage regulators, some had both. Rectifiers blow when the battery and ground are not making a good connection with the rectifier.

Can anyone help me identify the brand of this hull?

Looks like it says Elgin. The emblem looks like the Johnson one, and since Elgin is related to that..... Certainly from the 60's or early 70's.

    1996 Ocean Runner 150 trim

PTT units take Dextron auto trans fluid. Of course the OEM sells PTT fluid for it as well. Make sure the trim pivots are greased. Your motor will have two zerc fittings. You need to help the motor trim by hand, Using both your hands and PTT motor)until it is all the way up. Now use the...

    What next? 90 hp Mariner

Once the carbs clog, they do not unclog themselves. The carb clog can also cause the motor to run lean and hot, hence the compression test recommendation.

High RPM surge driving me nuts!!!

Over oiling by the OMS pump is usually caused by an air leak on the gasoline side. I would check your fuel line for air leaks. Check the main strainer and make sure the seals and oring are good. Those motors were not designed for an electric fuel pump. You may be force-feeding the carbs or...

    What next? 90 hp Mariner

Your post said it run and then died and wouldn't restart. That is consistent with carbs becoming clogged, as junk is sucked into the carbs. Did I read it wrong?

    What next? 90 hp Mariner

So no gas from the carbs when pumping primer? That would indicate stuck float valves. Also, those particles can easily clog carbs. So if they came from the carb, it is time for cleaning and rebuild and new fuel line and filter.

1997 Merc. 40 HP Upper motor mounts

Replacing the upper mounts is a major repair. You need to remove the gearcase and the powerhead. Then remove the exhaust extension to get to the mounts. You will need a powerhead base gasket and perhaps another gasket or two to reassemble. The mounting bolts usually need to be cut off...

    No pee Johnson outboard

Water pumps are kind of important. I would recommend a complete water pump kit with impeller, gaskets and housing. Sanding the impeller down probably doesn't give your the fine tolerance fit that is called for.

Looking For A New Gps/Depth Finder.

JWS, if you want a thru hull transducer, you must test it before you install it, as some parts of the hull will block the signal. So pick out a good spot in the bilge where the transducer is as perpendicular as can be, which is not easy in a vee hull. Get it wet, and try it with the boat in...

New to boats need help with battery choice

I cannot tell how bad the stringers or floor are from the photos. However, they don't look too rotten as you would see debris falling from them. The floor looks to be intact, except the white rectangle may be a patch. You are going to install foam floatation under the floor, right? The motor...

1986 Merc, start and trim problems

Likely a power wire rubbed against a ground wire, and blew the fuse. Check the insulation where it exits the cowling and enters the control. PTT wires often wrap around the control throttle handle pivot. They can wear there.

Nautolex flooring adhesive and spar varnish?

You might check out mastic for sheet goods (linoleum). If they have indoor/outdoor adhesive for that, I expect it would work for you.

    1989 Celebrity 181BR Restoration

Normally you can trim the motor with the ign key off. That is if the wiring is original. You will need power to the dashboard. So if the blower works, you likely have power to the dash. You need to check the power to the PTT pump/motor. The battery is connected directly to the PTT solenoid...

1974 Starcraft Holiday Restomod (convert to open bow)

Yes, I thought you were using pop rivets for the hull. However, I still think there are pop rivets with the ends sealed by aluminum, so they are waterproof. If you have a place you cannot buck, they may help.

1974 Starcraft Holiday Restomod (convert to open bow)

I think you want solid rivets so it doesn't leak. I think they are available for pop riveters.

Nautolex flooring adhesive and spar varnish?

Gee, what does Nautolex recommend? Why are you not sealing the deck with fiberglass cloth and poly resin? It is much better than OTF/spar varnish, as it adds strength to the deck, holds seams together, and is more waterproof than OTF/Spar, IMO. As long as the poly resin/cloth is not...
