    1989 xr4 150 that sat 3 years issues.

Outboard spark plug wires have stranded stainless steel conductors. Do not use resistor wire as used in autos. You can search for aftermarket custom fit from Sierra or others, or use OEM. You can make your own, with new springs, boots etc., however, I would buy them premade, to eliminate any...

Primer for Wood for oil-based Rustoleum?

Presumably the transom board is wood? Rustolium does make a primer for wood, although you could use brand any oil based primer for wood. I am not sure I would use paint on any underwater wood. Paint just sits on the surface of the wood and blisters too easily when exposed to moisture. I...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

If you know the brand of the trailer, you can look at the large trailer places like etrailer or eastern marine. Their websites have OEM replacements, that may tell you exactly what you had new. Armed with that knowledge, you can pick and choose what you want to replace. It does look like you...

    1989 xr4 150 that sat 3 years issues.

I doubt that motor had an electric fuel pump from the factory. I doubt it is your reed valves. They are pretty robust. Look for a mechanical fuel pump and rebuild it, and sack the electric one. A defective fuel pump diagram will flood some cylinders. Check spark plug wires for arcing to...

Searched - DIY Transom Cap Ideas

If you do not need great strength, look at some rubber or thin metal rub rails. They have solid rubber, solid aluminum which can be bent and other options. They attach with SS screws or pop rivets. I think taco is a large manufacturer.

Where to obtain correct service manual?

You might check the large black wire connection to the down relay. For up to work, the down relay must be grounded, when not energized. I believe those relays have 2 grounds, one for the primary and one for the secondary circuit. Since down works, the ground (and power) on the down relay...

Put a Stillson (strap) wrench on the balancer. if she won't turn over, with the heads off, you have serious bottom end issues. What does the oil look like?

Where to obtain correct service manual?

Do yourself a favor. Pull the cowling and trace the blue wires from the PTT relays to the switch in the cowling. See if it goes thru a trim limit switch, or direct to the switch. It might just be unplugged or broken.

    1989 Celebrity 181BR Restoration

Chris51280 states that he used 30 gal of resin, for $750. Not sure what he did with all that. He cited 65 yards of cloth and 8 sheets of plywood. That also seems excessive. The other materials are harder to check. I doubt you will need the non-slip sand, however. The goal is to bed the...

Where to obtain correct service manual?

If the trim doesn't work from either switch, but does when you jumper it, it is likely the up wiring where the trim wires meet under the cowling. Check the bullet connectors for unplugged or corroded. Some older motor models have a trim limit switch. On the 80s motors it is located in one of...

Spar urethane will last 5 years plus, if you mess it up. Some more lasts 10 years.

    1996 Ocean Runner 150 trim

Trim should work without ignition key, at both the engine and control. A lot of those motors have the ign key in the dashboard. They would be simple to change. If you have the key in the control, it might have a key number on it. A dealer could get you a key. Not sure if they are avail...

    Adding a Second Battery System

A Battery Isolator is simply a high amperage diode that routes DC to the other battery. A Battery Combiner is a relay that closes when the primary battery is charged up, connecting the secondary battery to the primary battery, for charging. Both are connected to the primary battery and the...

    Adding a Second Battery System

A battery isolator connected between the batteries will work, but cost you a 1V drop to the second battery. A battery combiner is a better option, as there is no voltage drop, when batteries are both charged. Be aware that a 1979 Merc only will charge about 9 Amps at high speed. That may not...

    Options for water sealing wood

OK Woodonglass, your recipe for varnish/oil/turpentine has a following on the internet. It is meant for interior fine wood working. They say add more oil for a close to the wood look and add more polyurethane for more protection. In the marine environment, for the OPs needs, I do not know...

Can run a 4.3 Merc without the alternator belt?

Sure until it overheats or drains the battery. Were you planning on connecting it to a water supply? No need for that w/o the belt. Why not connect a PS hose to the input and output and add some PS fluid?

    Prop size stamp?

Gee, remove the prop and grease the propshaft. That way it won't corrode on. Normally a fast boat uses a 3 blade prop. That blade looks to be high performance, so it may be fine. You will need to try it. SS props can be had for all prices on the internet, but usually cost at least $300, so...

Is my outboard direct fuel injected?

4 cylinder Mercs of the 70's were direct charge as well. They did not have the power ported pistons. Only the Mercs 1500 models up to 1977, had the power ported pistons(and matching block ports). They were considered Direct Charge as well. The power port pistons were also used in the 140HP...

Yikes. Where is the floatation foam? Does the water smell like rotten wood? Obviously you need to find the source of the water.
