    Mercury 175hp timing issues

Have you performed the link and synch procedure? That will tell you if you have spark at the right time for idle pickup timing and max spark advance. If you have spark at the right time, the stator placement is likely good, no?

    Mercury 500 50hp, 1976

The mercury (small m) switch grounds the ign circuit, killing the spark, when the motor tilts up unexpectedly, like when you hit something at speed. it is located near the switchbox, and looks like a automotive condenser, but with a plastic shell. If your motor is a 1976, it will have a pretty...

Great day on the boat, then ran aground.....What to have checked?

Rocks are bad. Look for cracks in the fiberglass and aluminum. In FG they usually show as concentric scratches. Any leaks in the boat? Any gear oil leaks in the outdrive? At tube towing speed, a depth finder probably will not give sufficient warning of the shallows. In the future it makes...

    Mercury 175hp timing issues

I would recommend a service manual. it will tell you how to link and synch that motor, which is essential to make it run correctly and not damage itself. There are some free online service manuals. You might search for them. According to the maxrules web site, your motor is a 1979.

    Tachometer sertting

12 pole or 6c, whichever your tach has. it should be pretty obvious if you get it wrong, as the reading will be way off.

    Waterlogged keel

Not sure what PT wood you got, but I have not had that issue. My deck railing is nearly 300 two by two pieces of lumber as balusters and have never been treated on the ends or anywhere. They are about 20 years old and were flooded a couple of times. None show any rot.

Would Smart Tabs help with the pounding?

The only way to smooth the ride is to drop the bow, so the sharp edge will cut through the waves. Adjustable Trim tabs will help with this, but the overall effect is mostly based on the shape of the bow. Smart tabs will likely not help very much, since you want the bow up or down based upon...

    Mercury starter motor

So you think the starter kept running after the engine was running? You heard the starter spinning after the motor was shut off? That would point to a stuck solenoid or more likely the ignition keyswitch malfunction. if the engine cranks fast when you are starting it, the starter is OK...

    Waterlogged keel

You don't work much with pressure treated lumber. It takes a few days in a dry environment to dry out where it is about as dense as non treated lumber. I have used it very effectively to effect repair of structural members and decks. I glassed some P/T 2X2s to the deck of my speedboat. The...

Mercruiser 3.0L mercarb 2 barrel Help!!!

Repost in Mercruiser forum with year of motor. I had thought Rochester carbs were standard on GM engines.

    115 mercury driveshaft stuck

What about gears and dogs? Usually the prices of the parts nearly equal the price for a new gearcase.

I would check torque on head bolts, to make sure they are tight, after you installed new head gaskets.

Mercruiser 3.0L mercarb 2 barrel Help!!!

You should repost this in the MerCruiser forum, along with year of motor. It also sounds like you bought a new carb, versus having your's rebuilt. Typical carbs have a idle speed screw and one idle mixture screw, for each barrel.

Bennet trim tab goes down, not up, regardless of up/down button

Bennett trim tabs are usually spring loaded. That is, when moving down they are under hydraulic pressure. When moving up, the fluid is withdrawn from the actuator and spring pressure causes them to come up. So unless the seals leak, there will not be fluid on both sides of the piston.

    Waterlogged keel

I had an 18 foot SeaRay bowrider. The "keel" consisted of a piece of 3/4" plywood, laid on it's end and scribed to match the hull. it was stapled to the deck, with steel staples, which failed due to rust. This "keel" was only under the ski well. What do you have? I replaced it with a piece...

    Which resin to finish floor?

Just sand and wipe the existing fiberglass with acetone, and you can use whatever resin you want to finish the deck. Make sure to use enough glass matting or cloth (I like mat) to give the plywood decking protection from the elements after a beating from shoes and feet.

    Electrical question

The two in the top of the photo have reset buttons. They are (actually were) circuit breakers. The bottom one may also be a circuit breaker, like ones used in cars years ago. They reset when they cool off from an overload. They obviously need to be trashed.

    115 mercury driveshaft stuck

Have you priced a new gearcase from SEI versus the parts for a rebuild? You may find them similar.

Hot on one side cool on other

You might tell us year and HP of motor. Sometimes compression leak causes overheat.
