    68 Johnson 9.5

try running with the cowl off.... if much better it may be breathing it's own exhaust due to a poor sealing skirt down below just above the water pump do a compression test and report back what you find. they are low compression engines but 65ps seems a minimum.

    Johnson 40e 74s blowing fuses

strange that it ran with that switch .. in any event you must now track down the source of the low resistance to ground which is causing the fuse to blow . the fuse has a B+12v side ... the other being the load side. connect one VOM lead to the LOAD side of the fuse and the other...

    Question about service manuals

actually running with the cowl off is good in the sense that more fresh air will reach the top mounted carb ... yet running in a drum could certainly cause carbon monoxide death...to the engine notwithstanding other issues running with the choke is imho more indicative of a dirty...

    Question about service manuals

this covers most problem areas if the innards are ok http://www.leeroysramblings.com/OMC_9.5.htm just as info... the large round exhaust skirt above the water pump sometimes will let fumes go up into the powerhead area and cause engine suffocation as fumes get sucked in the carb.
