    93 sunbird corsair 170ss

Sometimes you need to pull the motor, sometimes not. Remove the steering link from cable to motor. Turn the wheel to make the steering rod as short as possible. Loosen the large steering cable nut and pull the cable out of the tilt tube. If you are lucky, there is enough room in the...

Fuel tank condensation (tank not in use)

More likely rain water has leaked into the tank. Fuel level senders can and often leak. Look for a place where water can pool on top of the tank. If tank is steel or aluminum, look for pinholes or worse on the bottom and sides of the tank. Just because it holds 6Gal water, doesn't mean it...

    Disintegrating rivets

So you keep the boat in the water right? Is it at a marina or your dock? What bottom paint do you use? Did you recently install a SS prop? Marinas can have stray currents in the water that cause such corrosion. Of course, your dock could have the same as well, but less likely. A shotgun...

1962 Evinrude Starflite IV 75hp no spark HELP!

Magic marker marks are not timing marks. Ignore all of them. Wipe them off with acetone or alcohol. You obviously saw the cast timing mark on the distributor pully. That is the one to match with the one on the distributor pully base to set the first set of points. Then turn the distributor...

    Low compression #5, 115hp inline 6

So your not going to look at the pistons and cylinders, before deciding to make it a parts motor or tearing it apart to overhaul it? Inline six motors are too old to invest an significant $ into, IMO. The newest ones are 35 years old. If you can get them to run with some carb kits and a...

Trouble pulling skier out of the hole

Looking at the videos....your tachometer jumps all over the place. You are still idling and it jumps over 3000RPM. I suspect it has wiring issues or is broken. Secondly, at full speed, the tach shows 3000RPM. I cannot tell what speed you are going, but if the engine doesn't go over 3000RPM...

Water temperature coming out of the pee hole now what I'll do here

Pressure is good.....If telltale water is about 143*F, you should be good to go. Did you test overheat alarm? Simply ground it at the motor, key on and see if she buzzes.

    Low compression #5, 115hp inline 6

Pull the three transfer covers on the starboard side and have a look at the cylinders, pistons and rings. if they look good, I would run it. That one cylinder's compression is a bit low, but It is worth a try. Does it have spark on all 6 cylinders?

    110 Johnson maintenance

Racer, When cylinders go bad they have ~ 10PSI. I think a 15% variance in compression on a 35 year old motor is fine. Maybe not factory spec, but it is 35 years old. Would you have him scrap it or rebuild it if it was more than 10% difference in compression? I would vote to run it... JMO

    Johnson 150 fuel issues.

That is a good question. I am not sure what that spring clip does. I had thought it retained the needle valve. I would replace the inlet needle, seat and cover gasket, with the latter being most important.

Trouble pulling skier out of the hole

That 21P prop may be a bit too much pitch for your boat/motor combo. Your motor should develop the necessary power with that prop, but it may not be the best or fastest to do so. However, I think your technique is just as much to blame. What you should do is trim the motor in all the way...

Water temperature coming out of the pee hole now what I'll do here

Thermostats open at 143*. That is hot but not scalding. A lot of those motors discharge all the telltale water thru the thermostats, so you will not have a telltale until the motor is warm. Also, a good telltale stream is not an indicator of how well the motor is pumping cooling water. A...

    Johnson 150 fuel issues.

Your fuel pump is obviously not pumping correctly. You motor likely has a vapor separator just above the OMS pump. It' s cover must be airtight, and it's float valve must be working to properly draw fuel from the tank. In addition, you likely have a vapor pump on that motor. It also must...

    Switched 12v

The switched +12VDC wire on an outboard is provided by the acc terminal on the ign switch and is usually purple in color. However, it is normally used only for low power items, that need to operate with the engine, like gauges. Normally you would have an accessory switch to run stereos, GPSs...

Did my lower unit get damaged?

Your driveshaft seal appears to be leaking. It happens. Clean up and lube the driveshaft. Now replace the waterpump base, gasket and oring. It will have a new seal installed in it. Make sure you use the correct oring (there are extras in the kit), and that the base is seated completely.

1962 Evinrude Starflite IV 75hp no spark HELP!

You can set the points with a feeler gauge. Not as accurate as using timing marks and light (or ohmmeter), but since you do not have the mark on the back of the distributor pully base, it is better than nothing. Since the points are connected together, a bad setting on one set, affects both...

Mercury V6 fuel flow from all carbs

No response? Do you have a stock fuel pump or some electrical fuel pump on her? Electrical fuel pumps can flood the carbs easily with their higher pressure. If stock pump, it is time to clean the carbs, install new gaskets inlet needles and seats and new floats if you can get 'em. Set the...

76 Mercury 850 runs good on muffs but wont accelerat much past idle in water

Mark, if you tune those carbs for smooth idle like everyone does, or leave them at initial settings, they will be too lean to allow acceleration. it is an idiosyncrasy of the side bowl carbs on Merc motors of that vintage. I really doubt he changed the idle jets and they are too "tight". If...
