Wondering about the need for "variable" oil mix.

Newer oil injection systems do not very the oil ratio. My '98 Johnny runs about 60::1 all the time. The advantage is that I get exactly 60::1 and freshly mixed fuel. A lot of people will tell you to deep six the Autoblend. I have no experience with it, so I have no opinion. Outboards can...

    VRO Pump Failure

Tony, those OMS pumps will add more oil to the gasoline, if there is an air leak in the gasoline line. Check the main strainers gasket and Orings for air leaks. Ditto on all fuel line to fitting connections.

Those 4.3 motors have a ground cable on the back of the block. Hard to see if it is clean. If you haven't checked that, it is worthwhile.

    Won't go over 4,000 RPM

You should repost this in the MerCruiser forum. Those guys are experts and can tell you if it is the coupler or something else.

    Mercury 850

That engine doesn't have an exhaust manifold. It has an outer water jacket cover on the port side. Under that is a baffle and under that is the inner water jacket cover. The exhaust covers can be removed, without pulling the powerhead, but it is very hard to do it that way, and if you break a...

The other choice is to cross them to a plug that is available locally. Do they cross to AC, Champion or Autolite?

SEI makes replacement Alpha I drives. They are much cheaper than OEM, and may rival used prices.

There might be a red circuit breaker button on the engine, where the wiring plugs in. However, if you jumpered the slave solenoid and got nothing, I doubt that is the issue. Have you tried to turn the motor with a wrench? They can get hydrolocked.

Lower unit will not go all the way in

Nuts, keep the motor and control in neutral. Does your motor have that plastic insert over the shift rod? If so, install it in the midsection to hold the upper shift rod in place and centered. Alternatively, Use some needle nose pliers to grab the shift rod above the midsection and align it...

    Hope outboard ain't too heavt

Your IL6 plus outdrive weighed 650#. A lot of that is the outdrive which is at the stern of the boat. I expect the boat to float much higher with the OB.

A distributor ignition model derives spark from battery voltage. The stator only serves to charge the battery. So missing spark is not the stator's fault. At this age, a lot of the spark plug wires are bad and arc to ground. They are solid stainless steel wire cored, and should have zero...

Like any motor, if you buy the service manual, and read it, you will understand what repairs you can do with no diagnostic equipment, which you can do with reasonable-priced diagnostic equipment and those which require expensive diagnostic equipment. Optimax motors require dual pressure gauges...

    Throttle and idle controls

Grease the stainless steel ends of the cables where they ride into the brass cable barrels. There are a couple of plastic "knobs" that ride in the grooves of the throttle disc. See if they are broken or worn.

A lot of the bridge rectifiers have a hole in their center. Find a spot on the front cowling support, above the switchbox and bolt it on. There are usually some holes around there. You could also probably find one of the original bolts on the rectifier will hold it. That way the wiring will...

    Throttle and idle controls

You do have neutral at midnight, right? If so, and your control does not operate as I have described, you likely need a new control or a repair on yours's.

    Mercury 850 1973 Aftermarket Tach

I am shocked that you cannot find a replacement. Sierra used to make them. Your rectifier was the old large beige ugly one with the three colors. A newer black square style will work just fine. Alternatively, find a 15A-25A bridge rectifier on the web for $5 and install it. Just remember...

    Throttle and idle controls

Sometimes they move more than you would expect. On a MerControl from that era, midnight is neutral. Forward can engage as late as 10 o'clock. (right hand control). As long as you get full throttle, say by 8 or 8:30 you are OK. There is no adjustment on the MerControls. Worn parts can be...

Well, then you would be in the minority. I predict a dark future for direct injection 2 cycle OBs. e-TEC is already gone. Optimax is still being manufactured, for now. I couldn't easily find out if Yamaha HPDI is still being made, but it doesn't appear so. The reason IMO, is that 2 Cycle DI...
