    Paint Recommendations please

Use a lambswool pad and a rotary polisher, plus some liquid rubbing compound. She will buff up real nice. Then coat it with some good wax to hold the shine as long as possible. You will need to repeat every season. Painting will really screw it up. Leave it as a last resort.

Is an aluminum steel prop better than stainless?

Gee, I think it depends on how much stuff you hit, and what kind of boat you have. In our shallow bay (sand and silt bottom), you will grind up an aluminum prop, with an 19' I/O runabout. The I/O weight causes the boat to dig in upon acceleration. In that case a SS prop is better, as sand...

    pAm I thinking correctly??

In theory, adding 2 " of pitch decreases RPM abut 400. So an 11P prop should give about 5800RPM.

Looking to add a drain plug to a jon boat

If you want a floor drain, get one with a scoop fitting on the exterior. The scoop deflects water under the boat a bit, so the drain hole is dry at cruising speed, allowing you to pull the plug while cruising. I don't readily find a picture of one, but if you picture a clam shell, like this...

    Help with motor height adjustment

Mark, I was not referring to the trim tab, although, it is true that the higher the motor the less effect the trim tab has on steering torque. I added a wedge to the skeg to make up for reduced effect of the trim tab, due to the motor height on my speedboat. I was referring to the trim of the...

    Inline6 90 to 115 hp?

The block of the 90HP il6 has different porting and likely different pistons than the 115HP il6. If you bought a 90HP powerhead, you have a 90HP motor.

    Mercury 850 1973 Aftermarket Tach

Fazt is suggesting that one of the diodes in your rectifier is shorted, grounding 1 of the yellow wires. This will half your charging rate and could cause a discharge of the battery when not running. You should test the rectifier. It is simply a bridge rectifier with the -DC post internally...

Near new old 1996 Mercury 115

Starcraftkid, Not sure what century or world you are living in, but most/all of your statements are incorrect. The weight difference between new 4 cycle and 2 cycle direct injection motors is small or nil. Older 2 cycle motors may be lighter, but boats are rated for power, not weight. No one...

    Help with motor height adjustment

The motor looks to be too low. You want the antiventilation plate at the surface of the water or above. Once you get the A-V plate on the surface, the rest of the up adjustment is by trial and error. The higher the motor, the less effect trim has. You want the motor low enough to allow the...

    New decals

Use a heat gun and a putty knife to get the old ones off. Use some rubbing alcohol to remove any adhesive, and install new decals. If you are careful, you may not need to repaint the cowling.

    Won't go over 4,000 RPM

Normally the OEM chooses the prop diameter. You Choose the prop pitch. If the old prop had a 21" pitch, and you liked it's performance, choose another 21" pitch.

    Simplest 2 Battery Setup?

Buy a battery switch and connect both batteries to it. Set it to both for running so the motor will charge both batteries. When you are stopped and relaxing, set the switch to one battery, saving the other for starting the motor. Easy stuff.

    Trim sender not reading correctly?

They are pretty inaccurate. When trailering, listen to the sound. You can tell when it is all the way up or all the way down. No gauge needed. When running, trim by feel and sound of the motor. Again, no gauge needed.

    fiberglassing in new floor

Unfortunately, older floatation foam was open cell and absorbed water. Newer floatation foam is closed cell and does not absorb water. The wet stuff needs to come out and be replaced with the new, closed cell, pour in foam.

You will want to use stainless or monel staples. You will want to use rot-proof coat thread to sew the vinyl. usually you can find nylon coat thread. There are special leather sewing needles. They are a bit better for sewing vinyl. You will need a cording foot and some line to make the...

Near new old 1996 Mercury 115

Sure, let him try it. Just trying to set expectations. He is in Jersey now. No one will believe it is a freshwater motor, and only a DIYer will buy an older motor, and they like garage sale prices. Just saying...

1981 mercury tower of power 115

That could easily be dirty or mis-adjusted carbs as well. I would recommend an OEM service manual. It would be pretty easy to check the idle pickup timing and max spark advance. If those are on spec, it would be time to check the carbs.

    1979 1/2 115hp Mercury Tower of Power - Controls

One more thing. The control I cited has a different electrical connection that your motor. You would either need to graft it to your wiring harness or replace your motor harness. Your motor should have the ADI ignition with six ign coils. If you check the parts list of a later model ('86)...
