    I would pull the starter and look inside at the flywheel. Could be your missing some teeth on the flywheel

    Could very well be the wire connection Don't have a good wiring diagram, but finding pins 27 Knock 1+ 28 Knock 1- 29 Knock 2+ 30 Knock 2- But does not mention J1 or 2 but Merc should be J1 Having only one then should be 27 and 28 Should be a Bark Blue wire

    Use the noid of meter, turn key ON, motor not running and the light should be OFF. Or with a meter measure both pins to ground. Both side will measure 12V. If one measured 0V then there is a ground being applied

    Having a water connection like that you should have a Bravo drive. Does your water connection use a valve that is closed before running? If it does then I would go back to the Stat housing. Check the balls going to the elbows.

    Seeing your cooling system is a 7 point drain. Was the thermostat and all the pieces installed as shown? Note the thermostat goes against housing, then the gasket, then sleeve Also was the housing clean of any left over gasket material?

    Suggest; Pull both heads and look close at cylinder bores. If they look good and there isn't anything that stands out like excessive wear, get a valve job done on both heads
