    Boat in " great shape " I doubt it.----I suspect issues with the transom ( plywood core ) and perhaps the rust stains from motor mounting bolts are a clue.-----Most folks would use stainless there.----And install a new water pump impeller before launching this boat.

    Replace both coils.-----And you need to position the coils for correct clearance with flywheel.-----There is a special tool to save time.----But hurry to ----leroysramblings-----Great tutorial on how to work on this simple magneto.

    Next is to run with a timing light ( one cylinder at a time ) and see if you can find a cylinder with a miss.

    Do a compression test first before spending any beer tokens on coils.----Post the numbers here.

    The 1966 pistons at 0.040" should work.------But look for a donor 18 HP block assembly.----Many low hr ones out there.------Place a free wanted ad on -----aomci-----website.------Save you a lot of beer tokens. ----Your location ?

    Go to a shop.----Marine / machine shop.----Have them remove / cut out the drain plug.----Clean up threads and install new plugs.

    Strange that you would need 4 coils.----But the only difference is the orange wire and how it is attached.----What is your motor doing not doing ?

    Simple question ---Have you ever worked on one of these motors with the inspection port ??-----Are you saying that Johnson / Evinrude was clueless in the 50's and 60's----Note---- there is lots of room for a feeler gauge.-----Or some can eyeball 0.020" to finish a fishing trip !

    I suggest you take it back.----It would be a simple fix for an expert.

    Good spark means spark that will jump a gap of 1/4" or more on a test device.-----When you buy a motor it is a good idea to install a new impeller.----And to grease driveshaft spines.-----Pull the flywheel and have a look at the coils.

    Yes , but keep in mind if your were on a fishing trip you would only need 1 screwdriver to look at the breaker points.

    Test run with another tank and hose.-----Inspect fuel pump diaphragm, a new diaphragm is cheap.----Inspect primer pump on motor.-----Replace sparkplug boots.
