    Don't do it with drive in a tub, this will burn up the impeller. The pump doesn't do much sucking, so it will not suck the water up. The muffs need to be tight. Remove the inlet side of the hose going to the pump and with muffs connected see if water comes out (it should).

    Guess you got me at a disadvantage because I have not seen a timing mark on a motor which had the flat top cap. Not if a scanner is being used to determine timing I would agree, just not seeing it on the damper Here is what are super tech @muc said how to time the VP with this type cap

    OK, you said water came out drive pickup, didn't catch the term If the motors have been drained, did the motor run long enough to refill and let water exit?

    If you have a distributor cap that looks like the one below, there is no base timing mode

    There is a flush fitting Follow the fitting to see if there is a valve (manual or auto) which shuts off water going back to the drive. If valve is open, then check the drive for a clog (maybe even things like mud dobbers)

    The serial number doesn't show up but the GXI-C does The distributor shows up has the HVS and it is not adjusted with a timing light. Its Exact TDC on number one, then distributor is aligned as shown in pic This is Merc but same for VP
