    Going from tiller to helm?

Howdy Hooking the control handle is straight forward. One cable operates the throttle and the other shifts. These two cables are controlled by the single handle. Not being able to see the control you have I'm going to guess it has a smaller lever which when moved also increases the throttle...

    intermittent alarm

If your motor starts to knock you may not hear it, this is the reason the motor has a knock sensor. The sensor can also be defective and cause the issue. If the Blue wire is routed to close to the spark plug wires it can set a knock fault in the module. Here is how its tested

Truck, Car or Marine Motor Differences

So not to hijack a thread I'm starting this one for some discussion on the topic. There are thousands of threads here and other places which keep saying use a truck engine instead of a car. This topic is not about the gaskets, core plugs or any exterior components. The end point (as I took it)...

2 questions about Apla 1 water pump kit replacement

Being a 1988 you probably have a grove in the shaft, the O-ring (item 43) would go there http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/subassembly/30870/2203/110

    Swim Platform Construction

Don't see the need for the vertical support the transom. The edge or the upper brace will wear into the hull over time. The bottom point bracket covers the end of the angle but should be wider. The lower attaching point can be small because it has only up and downward forces. The upper...

    Swim Platform Construction

My comment was to keep the lower attaching point from going so low, so the brace would need to be made with thicker stock. Yes use a wide base to allow for more attaching points and also to reduce side loading.

    Swim Platform Construction

That's the right idea, I would suggest making them out of some thick material and therefore you won't need to go so far down to get the same support. Use plates on the inside to tighten against. These are a bit on the thin side but still good enough depending on how wide the platform will be.

What Type and Weight Gear Oil

According to the manual http://boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1992-2001johnsonevinrude.html#/28 Says to use Evinrude/Johnson Ulta-HPF or equivalent GL-5 marine lube. The GL-5 is synthetic 80W90 or 90W so there is several out there, Merc, Mobile One, Amsoil and others. Not an outboard guy

    454 vs 383

Have to agree, that is a lot of folks even for a deck boat. The boat will need a Bravo drive and preferably a Bravo 3 drive. Probably the 383

    Security for vacant house

We're buying a house and will later fix up and sell. Current quote from the insurance company wants as much for this place as our home. So I'm debating between getting it, reducing the amount to be insured, and maybe setup some cameras. I know if something happens and camera's catch it, it...

Why do I have two thermostats?

Here is the Merc layout and I used the rear mounted HE instead of the front mount because of the layout. Note the raw water comes in on one side and goes out the other end Where does this hose come from on your layout?

Why do I have two thermostats?

Don't know about two thermostats but the raw water should come in, go thru the Heat Exchanger (HE) and then out thru the exhaust elbows. Yours looks like the raw water comes in and then is connected to the engine circulating pump. If this is the case, your pumping raw water into the motor...

    More Bravo Impeller Info

Since I to have to hang upside down the Hardin pump will also cause another unseen issue. The pump is heavier so getting it in place will take more mussel. I also found that my old suction hose is having a hard time getting all the way on. The pumps fittings (cost $25 each) have a thin edge...

    More Bravo Impeller Info

Temps up to 54 so decided to turn my self into a pretzel and replace the water pump housing with the Hardin SS along with the impeller. The impeller has been installed for two seasons (spring 2014 to 1-1-2017). Note the first pick shows the impeller has a heavy set to the blades. 1030 AM...
