Complete rebuild of 1979 Checkmate Eluder

I was going to start this thread in the "completed projects" section, but noticed that I can't start a thread there (so I'm guessing the moderators will move this over once I complete the thread.) I finished this rebuild over a year ago and thought I'd create a thread detailing the entire...

    Hard Starting

1973 Merc 7.5 which I'm repairing. It has good compression, good spark, and once I get it started it idles perfectly and runs good up to full throttle in gear. The only problem is that it takes FOREVER to start when cold, somewhere around 20 or so pulls. Any thoughts on what can cause this?

    '73 7.5 HP float adjustment ???

I've been repairing this little engine which was pretty much free to me. Test ran it last night and found out that it's flooding real bad. I'm pretty sure it needs a new float, when I first pumped up the primer bulb it got good and firm, after a few minutes I could pump the primer bulb and see...

Wow, who'd of thought old outboards were worth so much !!!!

Just for giggles I've been watching this old 7.5 Merc on ebay for a while. I'd searched for mid 70's 7.5 Mercs a while back to see what I might get for one I was repairing, most were asking between $200 and $300 for them, except this one which the seller was very very very proud of. Several...

Frank Matthews used engines (near Savannah) - multiple complaints

I'd avoided using names before, worried that I might be breaking forum rules. I just reread the rules and they state that as long as I strictly stick to facts that I can post my experiences about a vendor. It turns out that SparkieBoat and I both got ripped off by the same guy - Frank Mathews...

Federal ethanol subsidies expired - possible good news for ethanol haters

Congress quietly let the federal subsidy for ethanol use in gasoline expire on Dec. 31. It's my opinion that ethanol production will now be less lucrative for the big chemical producers, and they (the chemical companies) will quit trying to push E-15 down our throats (and hopefully we can move...

    1973 Merc 7.5 - lubrication questions

I'm nearly finished refurbishing this engine :) , and have just a couple more questions (I hope). 1) Does this engine run 24:1 or 50:1 gas/oil ratio? 2) How much gear lube does the lower unit take? Seeing as how high the gearcase vent screw is, it just doesn't seem right to fill it all the...

    1973 Merc 7.5 - lower unit questions

I'm nearly done refurbishing this engine, pulled the lower unit last night. Does anybody know of a source for the lower unit shift shaft oil seal (1973 Merc 7.5)? I was pleasantly surprised to see that Iboats stocks the impeller (geeze that thing's tiny compared to what I'm used to !!!), but...

'73 7.5 HP - parts sources and an ignition question

I have a 1973 7.5 HP Mercury that was given to me, my intention is to get it running, replace the impeller, give it fresh gear lube, and sell it. It seems to be in pretty good condition except for some ignition wires (including the points) on which the insulation is cracking and falling off...

    Fuel Pump Repair Kit

Is there a fuel pump rebuild kit available for a 1990 Johnson 200? I've checked iboats and some other sites but haven't found one. There's one listed for '91 to '93 VRO's (even though the '93 fuel pump has a different part number), but not for the '90 VRO. (I'm only worried about rebuilding...

'96 Johnson 200 carbs - idle mixture adjustment

My carbs are from a '96 Johnson 200 (they have a needle valve in the throttle body). What's a good starting point for adjusting these, and do these needles go in to richen or out? Reason I'm asking this is I'm experiencing lean sneeze on at least a couple of cylinders - I can see an...

    Intake Drain ??

Is the intake drain (#2, arrow pointing to it in diagram) supposed to be free flowing in both directions, or one direction only (if so I presume outward). If it matters this is a 1990 Johnson 200 (I assume it would be the same for most any engine).

    1990 Johnson 200 - runs ok for 20 minutes then won't idle

This engine's had multiple issues since I purchased it, and that's made it confusing at times trying to describe the problems and of course trying to diagnose them. I feel like I may be down to the last problem, however it's kicking my butt. The last two times I've taken the boat to the lake...

Ignition problem (?), only after running awhile

1990 Johnson 200. A little history (apparently this engine has multiple issues): Compression is 80 to 82 on all cylinders. Previously this engine, as soon as quick-start turned off, would intermittantly drop rpm and often die. The OMC service manual test procedures indicated I had a bad timer...

    Missing part, does it matter?

I think I'm getting near the end of my headaches with my jury-rigged ebay engine (1990 Johnson 200). One of the things that's not on the engine is the idle timing stop bracket and screw, but is that really going to matter enough to justify pulling the flywheel again and installing one? I'm...

    Crankshaft Seal

1990 Johnson 200. I noticed some oil on and under the timer base. Not a lot, but definitely noticeable. SO... I'm guessing that means I'm going to be replacing the top crankshaft seal, doesn't it? The diagram on shop2.evinrude.com shows a seal above the bearing assembly, as well as 2...

Why does a timer base fail????

This is the 1990 Johnson 200 I bought on ebay, and really thought I had the last of the problems taken care of. I had done the tests on the electrical system as called for in the factory manual, and they pointed to a bad timer base. I found a timer base off a 1996 Johnson 225 which was being...

    Tilt/trim motor bearing- '90 Johnson 200

I've been around enough electric motors to know a bad bearing when I hear one, and there's no doubt my tilt/trim motor has a bad bearing. Can the bearings be easily replaced in that motor, and does anyone know the part number of the bearing (not the OMC part number but a standard bearing number...

Plans built plywood hull - durability question

I'm thinking about building one of the Glen-L designs which will be a plywood hull with fiberglass laminated over the plywood. While I don't forsee any issues with the build one question is gnawing at me - how well do these hulls handle all the scrapes etc. that are bound to happen? I have...

    Rectifier/regulator testing

1990 Johnson 200. The only test of the combination rectifier/regulator in the factory service manual is a load test with the engine running at 4500 rpm. I can't do that in my driveway. Is it not valid to use the diode test position on a digital meter (as with the earlier engines that used a...
