    Battery charging query

Am I right in assuming that whichever battery I am using in a dual battery set up, is the one that will be charged by the alternator. I have a 1 or 2 or 1+2 battery switch, so what happens if both batteries are selected. Does the weaker one take the charge automatically and which one then starts...

    Fuel pump install

Having issues installing my new fuel pump. Is the lever inside the block supposed to sit above or below the operating lever on the pump itself? Searches online suggest it sits above, having first been raised, prior to fitting the pump. Mine refuses to lift. Even got a heavy wire loop around it...

    Trim sender question

As part of my refurb, I was investigating the trim sender on my boat, as it isn't working. The limit switch works fine, but investigation shows that the wires from the trim gauge goes through the transom and no further! Where should they be hooked up to continue on to the dash gauge? I looked...

    Engine ID

So, on the surface, I have a 1990 5.7 litre mercruiser. But the Devil is in the detail. When I bought the boat in April 2016, the PO told me it was a 1990 model, but had extensive work done to it. (circa summer 2014 according to receipts) The boat came with several boxes of bits and pieces...

    Alarm

I've seen mention in various posts about an alarm fitted to the engine, to warn against low oil pressure/ overheating. From what I've seen in my refurb, I don't think my 1990 mercruiser 5.7 is fitted with any such alarm. If it is, where would it be and if not, is it possible to retrofit such a...

    Anode question

Wasn't sure where else to post this, but as I'm running a Mercruiser, it's close enough. My question regarding anodes is, do I need one/some? My boat doesn't have shore power and is only used in saltwater. It doesn't share any marina type facilities with other boats and would only come into...

    Air filter

Should my 1990 V8 5.7 Mercruiser be fitted with an air filter? I'm sure I've heard mention of such in various posts etcetera. If so, is it housed in the flame arrestor? Any information welcome, thanks.

    HT Leads

Wondering if anybody has a part number or reference number for a set of HT leads, appropriate to my engine. I can't find a serial/ engine number anywhere on it, which would help, but in the absence of same, I'm talking about a 1990 5.7 V8 with Thunderbolt ignition. Distributor cap, rotor, but no...

    A few questions

So, a few questions that hopefully, the learned folk on here can help me with. 1st picture shows a small cylindrical device down behind the distributor. Can anyone tell me what it is? Second picture shows a black wire with an eye on the end, which emerges from the loom and I'm assuming it's a...

    Window trim

Does anyone have a good source for window trim material for a Wellcraft, although the windows are pretty generic. I'm looking for the trim that sits into the channel in the front and side windows and the larger trim that dresses off and retains the side windows up on deck. Any thoughts appreciated.

    Fuel gauge issues.

Mentioned this before but still no resolution. My fuel gauge pegs full when I switch on the ignition. It's a new Faria gauge and it does this even when the sender is totally disconnected. I've checked for shorts etc and all the relevant wiring checks out fine. The gauge replaces an old non...

    Engine Flush Question

I have a freshwater tank on my boat, which would hold more water than I would use in a very long time. The water is pumped to the sink via a pressure pump and I was wondering about the possibility of putting a "tee" on this supply and running another supply to flush the engine after ( saltwater)...

    Another fuel gauge question.

Many of the gauges on my Wellcraft had been replaced with Faria instruments and I finished off things by replacing the rest, including the fuel gauge. However, when I switch on the ignition the gauge jumps to full, despite the tank being empty. This happens even with the sender at the tank...

    What's this?

Despite studying illustrations in my Seloc manual, I'm still trying to identify the part pointed out in the accompanying picture. It's the carburettor, which I've identified as a 4BBL Rochester, unless I'm mistaken. Any information much appreciated.

    Solar panel wiring

I'm currently installing a solar panel on my boat, just to keep the main "starting" battery topped up, while the boat sits on its' mooring. But I'm considering incorporating the option to switch between the starting battery and the leisure battery. The solar panel has a regulator wired in, which...

    Alternate Mercruiser ID.

Hi all. Trying to accurately identify exactly what Mercruiser I have. What I do know is that it's a 5.7 V8 with an alpha 1. 1990 according to the previous owner. The original engine number is on some documentation, but this is somewhat erased with the word "changed" written below. I know the...

    Boat ID

On my Wellcraft Sportsman, I noticed the faint outline of it's "registration" number, where the original decal/lettering had been removed. FWIW, I live in Ireland where registration as such, isn't a requirement. Anyway, my question is this. Is there a database online or anywhere, that might give...

    Mooring question

Just trying to get a handle on the recommended weight and type of mooring best suited to my boat. It's a 25' Wellcraft Sportsman and is rated at 4,400 pounds dry weight. I intend to moor it in my local harbour, which is pretty well sheltered (and tidal) and the sea bed is for the most part mud...

    What's this?

Hello all and season's greetings. Still familiarising myself with the ( 1990 Mercruiser 5.7 V8 ) engine in my boat and came across the attached. Looking through my Seloc owners manual didn't help so I was wondering if any of you wise sages could identify it. It looks like a coil or ignition...

    Ignition powered items?

As part of the refurb on my Wellcraft, I moved/replaced the old (glass) fuse panel from beneath the console and relocated it using a new blade type fuse board, inside the cabin. I also replaced the ignition switch, which was proving to be a bit hit and miss. I've recently come across a few...
