Responsible for your wake? maybe not...

Last night I was out in the ICW moving the boat to our new house (15 miles south). Got a later start then I had hoped for, but didn't mind the nighttime cruise. About 5 miles into my journey, at about 7pm, I was stopped by the Coast Guard (they couldn't see my all-around light because of the...

    Laser Printer Suggestions

We changed our point of sale system at our store, and our old printer (Dell M5200) isn't compatible with the way the new software prints one of the pages. We (wife) own a flowershop, and along with a receipt, we print out an 8.5"x11" work order, and an 'enclosure card' (the little cards that...

    Boat lift question

Got a house on the water with a lift, which we'll be moving into before Turkey Day if all goes well. Was down there today, and was looking at my new (to me) dock and lift, both of which will be my first. The front of the lift looked a bit high, and on further inspection, realized that the cables...

    Found the leak. Now what?

Found the actual leak in my power steering system, and I'm told it's on the high pressure side, and can't be patched. I've also been told that the line can not be removed/replaced without removing the engine, as one side connects up underneath something that is inaccessible. Here's a pic of the...

    Penn 309?

Looking at a used Penn 309 on a Penn Senator rod a buddy has, and would like some opinions. I really was looking for a Senator 4/0, but the price is way right on this combo. Is this a decent all-around combo? I mostly bottom fish, but also want to troll with it. I fish the Gulf to about 60', and...

PFD's - What do you carry?

Ladyfish's (ie iboats forum) new Safety category prompted me to start this, along with my interest in changing some of my PFD's. I never have more than 4 adults and 2 kids on my boat, and I keep 7 adult and 4 child pfds on board. Four of the adults are type I, 3 are type III's, and all the kids...

    Oil Light Flickering

On our delivery vehicle, a 1998 Chrysler Town & Country, the oil light was flickering when we would come to a stop (parking or at a red light), and then go off. Would only happen for a second or two, and doesn't come on when in Park or Neutral. First time this happened was about a week ago, and...

    Grrrrr........ My pet peeve

Why do so many people ask 'Is this boat worth this much?' or 'Is this a good boat?' How the heck would we know! We aren't there to see it, hear it, feel it, etc. Sometimes I just want to say to these people, 'Why are you taking up forum space with this? If YOU think it's worth it, then it is.'...

    Clockwise or Counter-clockwise starter?

How do I know whether my starter is clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation? It's a 1984 MCM 488r, and I need a new starter, and the shop wants to know which one it is.

    Possible causes???

I'm going to make this a generic engine question, in hopes of more responses. Besides, I don't think the specific engine info would have much to do with it. What are possible causes for air build-up in a fuel line/system? Or, what are possible causes for a vacuum being created in a fuel...

    Which way....

does fuel flow through a fuel water separator? Does it go through the center hole, and then out through the smaller holes? or vice verse?

Power Steering fluid disappears.. part 2

Ok, I thought the power steering cooler was leaking, so I replaced it. No, it wasn't a new one, but it held up to a pressure test (3psi for about 15 min). I'm still loosing fluid, but I see no leaks. Any ideas???

    Is it just me, or...?

As soon as Labor Day passes, the number of new threads drop off like somebody pulled the plug. During the national boating season, seems like it's hard to keep up with all the threads. Now that most boaters' season has come to an end, there's barely anything new to read. :(

    In-water prop change

Prop-noob here. I've never changed a prop before, and want to now. The boat is wet-slipped. The water is only about 3' deep at low, so I figure I'll change it in the water. Only problem (maybe a problem) is that with the tilt all the way up, the prop is still submerged. Is this a problem? What...

Two pumps with one thru-hull fitting?

Would you connect two bilge pumps together through one thru-hull? Rule says it's ok, and gives instructions on how to do it; - ITT/Rule website My only question is how large would the thru-hull have to be? If each is to use a 3/4" discharge, would you double the single (1-1/2"), or a size...

    Installing a 2nd bilge pump

I picked up a Rule-Mate 500 automatic bilge pump for next to nothing at a yard sale. It's really smaller (gph wise) then I want, but it'll do for now. I eventually want to put in a 1100-2000gph pump. The 500gph uses a 3/4" hose, and the larger ones use 1-1/8". My question is; is there a...

Any ideas of what I should replace my speedo with?

I want to remove my speedometer. It's not original, doesn't light up at night, and is (like most boat speedos) inaccurate. I use my gps if I really want to know my speed. It's the regular speedo size (4" dia range)., and I want to put something else there, but can't think of anything. Anyone...

    Compass vs. GPS

I have both a compass and a GPS on board. Before GPS, I seemed to live by the compass, but I can't remember the last time I looked at it from a navigational aid stand-point. My useless trivia question is; if you have GPS, do you still use your compass for its intended use?

    Operating Temperature

I've combed through my engine's owner's manual, checked every spec listed in the Seloc, and read gobs of posts here, to no avail. I have a Mercruiser 488r (aka 170), and I'd like to know what the proper operating temperature range is for it. Most of the time she runs right at 160*F, but it gets...

    Where to mount battery switch

I just got a Perko 8603 Battery Switch, and went down to the boat to figure out a location for it. I was shocked to find that I really don't have anywhere to put it along the stern. How far away from the batteries and engine could I safely run wires and install the switch? I'm thinking...
