Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

Couldn’t make it for a lake test today so I thought I’d check out the idling issue and see if it dropped rpms again. Found another issue I need to ask about. While running water is coming out from around where the shift rod comes out of the leg. Also in front of that is a hole that drains water...

Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

Wasn’t able to get to the water yet so I checked bolts. I found several on the exhaust cover where not tight at all so I fallowed the numbers and torched them all. The bottom ones took the most. I’m hoping that was my leak. All of other bolts on engine where good. The bottom pan took a little as...

Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

That was on my list. Not a drop anywhere. I checked around all gaskets looked for a hole everything I could think of but the whole thing stayed dry.

Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

Had to knock out the yard work yesterday and had a few minutes so I started the engine to check some things out I haven’t done in a while. Operating temperature, compression etc. Was going to check spark at idle but all of my pliers are old enough to have a pin hole in the insulation and I don’t...

Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

Yea the seal I found is $11. It doesn’t look to difficult to pull the engine. I just need to rig up a way to lift it while installing the seal. The manual shows checking the mounting bolts as regular maintenance. I’m learning more and more about outboards. Different animals from all the other...

Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

Wouldn’t I have noticed the exhaust smoke coming out of the cowling or noticed the smell when I removed the cowling? So I could end up pulling the engine to fix this one? What if I run it on muffs? Will the exhaust come out the middle leg and prop or up through the pan? No telling when those...

Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

Forgot I have to go out of town today. So I can’t work on it. I took a peak under the cowling just now though. I noticed some residue under the head. Also the bottom 2 carburetors have a little fuel residue in the top vents. Doesn’t look like they over flowed as there is no fuel anywhere else...

Hopefully I can get it to do it here at the house on muffs or in the tank while it’s not under a load. Thanks for the reply.

Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

Oh the reason for my water vapor (steam theory). I was on the lake a while back and had the cowling off working on the carburetors and a little water got in and I thought nothing about it. As I pulled into my next spot it started to sputter the same way. I wiped out all the water and fished for...

Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

Update with new problem: I haven’t had time for the boat for awhile. Except to start it every so often making sure I’m keeping fresh fuel. Even though I’m running none ethanol. I now have an older style tank with a vent I can open and close. Primer bulb gets solid. All was good until I finally...

Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

When I decarb the engine should I wait until I can take it to the lake and run it right away? I’ve got everything i need and ready with the holes drilled.

Thanks to all of you for the replies and advice. I wouldn’t have gotten this far without this forum and all your help. I gotta build up the boat account a little more then go see the prop guy on a smooth day to test out what he’s got.

Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

I went all out on the fuel line and bought the A1-15 rated black marine line . Yamaha fuel water separator, fuel bulb is a Yamaha how ever it’s the second one because the first one came apart. I’ve been handling the replacement with kit gloves. It’s a $25 bulb and I’m sure Yamaha makes better...

Bringing back to life 1982 Monark 16’ extra wide with 1992 40 MSHQ Yamaha

An older pic . Will definitely post a newer one. If you zoom in you can see where they hacked down the transom to put the short shaft motor on the boat and left it open. I want to dress that up and bolt the engine ( now it’s just clamps) . I’ll post a better picture tomorrow . Was wondering...

Carburetor question on restoration I’m working on 1992 40 hp MSHQ Yamaha

Left to right. Top , middle, bottom. I found me and old style fuel tank that’s in good shape. I’m going to clean it up and use it. Still gotta pull the fuel pump and check the diaphragm as suggested. It doesn’t seem to be priming as tight as when I first fixed the fuel leak and I can’t find any...

Do they make a plate to cover where the oiler is or do I just make sure they removed the drive and put it back?
