    Merc 470 Alternator Conversion

Got everything running great and now the voltage regulator is going. It charges at about 13.5 to 14.5 at idle, but goes up to about 16.5 as the RPM goes up. I guess I was kind of expecting this sooner or later anyway. Is the breezeworks kit still the way to go or are the any other viable...

    Merc 470 Fuel Pump Problem?

While I was testing my new water pump seals, I noticed fuel going up and down the overflow line from the carb to the fuel pump. The line was clear after the initial start and while the motor ran on muffs for about 20 minutes. However, as soon as I turned it off the line filled up with fuel. I...

    Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant Here are some pictures of the worst parts of the flywheel. There are no teeth missing or chipped, but these sections are a little rough. What do you think?

    Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant OK. I turned it by hand and everything was smooth. No noise except air coming out of the spark plug holes. Then...relaxed...I removed the starter. What should I look for on the starter? The teeth look a little ground down at the edge (but not too bad) and I...

    Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant Well, I got everything apart and it looks like I really screwed the pooch. The stud that holds the impeller on was bent and the impeller was catching on the impeller cover. I think I bent it by over torquing when installing the impeller. You can see the the...

    Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant Got the balancer on with an installer tool and about 10 greased washers. I greased the inside of the balancer and it went on pretty smoothly. Now my problem is that I don't know exactly where to stop. Will it bottom out like it does on cars? Th directions...

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant Sleeves are on. Time to remove the flanges. Do I need to remove the flange on the rear seal?

    Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant Installed the seals first so I can get good measurements for the speedi-sleeves. Back seal. The scratches and chips are from when PO did this repair (obviously not correctly). Front seal. I installed this one flush per directions. PO had it installed...

    Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant That makes sense...and maybe having oil on one side helps the rear seal too? So if I am going to pass on the rear speedi-sleeve, what should I use to clean up that area? and the middle part that is rusty?

New Bimini top on Ebay REALLY cheap????

Re: New Bimini top on Ebay REALLY cheap???? I bought a $140 bimini from safeguard covers 2 years ago and have been very happy with it. It has a 5 year warranty and the seller is right here in Orange County CA. I know they are certainly not made here, but I have somewhere to go if I have...

    470 Alternator Conversion

I was thinking of converting to an alternator while I have the front of the engine apart for water pump seal replacement. This way I would not have to go back in later to remove the stator. What is the cheapest way to do this? Is there a DIY option or do I have to buy a kit for $300 to $500.

    Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant There are some nice grooves and rust on the camshaft. Per the directions, I will measure the camshaft near the timing sprocket where the shaft is still in good shape. Measured - .8725"

    Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant Thanks for the advice guys. However, I was not able to salvage the oil pan gasket. I tried and tried and even broke a razor knife in the process, but the gasket pulled right off with the timing cover. Even though all my razor work was on the top of the gasket...

    Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant Here is a crappy picture of the impeller. Impeller is off. Does this look right? Shouldn't I see more of a seal here? All I see is the lip/spring sticking through. Somebody has obviously been in here before. There is gasket sealer everywhere.

    Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant Well, how is this for procrastination. I planned on doing this project last August and just started yesterday. ...and I can't blame the weather. I used the Stern Drive instructions, but skipped a few steps, such as lifting the front of the motor and heating...

    Good site/forum for sail boaters

Is there a site out there that is as great for sail boaters as the iboats forum is for motor boats? My brother-in-law just bought a sailboat and is looking for a forum with all the same great stuff we talk about here. I know there is a sail boat section here, but there are not very many posts...

Merc 470 3.7 Warm Start Troubles

Re: Merc 470 3.7 Warm Start Troubles Well, I took a tip from Terry and installed a second blower -- sucks in fresh air and blows directly on the carburetor. Hopefully that will cool things off a bit.I have read about people doing this successfully on cars. Heading to the lake for a few days...

    Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Well, I was getting ready for a big trip to lake Mohave next week and just noticed slow drips of coolant leaking from the weep hole. I have noticed a very slow loss of coolant lately (about a cup per 3 to 5 hours of running) and this is obviously where it is coming from. I know the seals...

Mercarb Float Needle -- which one is this?

I am changing the float in my 1986 Sea Ray 19' BR with Merc 470 (A679763) and 2 barrel Mercarb. The manual has 2 different float levels: 1) 3/8" for two piece solid; and 2) 9/16" for spring loaded. I just want to make sure -- which one is this? There is a spring, but it is still a 2 piece...
