    Low Compression, Low $ Advice

I was thinking the same thing. Those numbers aren't too bad. I have a 1999 115 Yamaha that has 135 compression and my mechanic says it's as good as a new one. My last boat had a 115 Yamaha also. I had a piston come apart and store the cylinder pretty bad. Our local Yamaha dealer was a high...

    Bimini control problem

So basically if it's hot enough to need the top up, it's probably too hot for the switch to work properly?!?! What an amazing design!!

1996 maxum 1900 full throttle issue

I've never understood the logic behind taking a carb off and taking it to somebody to rebuild it. If they aren't around to do the adjusting, you're still the one doing the important job. You "set the fuel/air screws back to normal"? If the carb had issues, probably someone had adjusted the...

Is this original pin or lock

Try an easy out first to see if it grabs it and screws it out. If you have a good cordless drill/impact gun they make some that have a drill tip on one end to drill a pilot hole and the easy out tip on the other end. Obviously the drill or impact gun has be be reversible. Pretty cheap, easy test.

    Sound deadening

I purchased some Noico foil faced sound deadening material off of Amazon to put under the cowling of my 115 Yamaha and it worked great. Very aggressive "peel and stick" adhesive and it has a little stretch to it so it forms to curves and corners well. It's surprisingly heavy. It's like it's...

    1992 40HP 2t Overheating

When you replaced the new water pump with the second new water pump, did everything look good? Only 2 things I can think of. Are you able to make sure the meta tube is going into the water pump housing? Are you sure you're turning the crankshaft clockwise when putting it all together so it is...

    1997 johnson 150 ocean runner

No idea what a "vapor tank" is. Obviously, the fuel pump sucks gas from the tank and pumps that into the lines going to the carburetors. If you take the fuel line off it will pump some gas out of that opening since there is no resistance in that line when removed. Do you have a fuel/water...

Seeking advice on seemingly large hull/structural repair! Help please! 1979 Marquis Catalina.

Marine grade plywood is pretty special stuff. As a former Manufacturer's Rep for Georgia-Pacific, I got to learn a lot about the manufacturing process. Marine grade plywood is a A-B grade panel. That means the face is an A grade veneer and back and inner plies are all B-grade or better. So...

    Problems with oversized boat motor

I had a 12' flat bottom that was rated for 10 HP. I inherited it with a 3 HP Evinrude. I was 16 years old with a need for speed. I bought a used 25 HP Evinrude and put that on the back. I kept both anchors and 2 6 gallon gas tanks in the bow to keep it down and it ran about 35 MPH! When I...

    Prop recomendation for mercury bigfoot.

Does it have a prop now? What size and pitch? What is your current speed and RPM's at full throttle? With that information, we can help you determine what prop pitch might be better for what you are trying to accomplish. I don't think we can intelligently answer your question without more...

    Randomly collapsing primer bulb?

9, My recommendation for the guy was purely for diagnosing the problem. I never intended to suggest that he take the fuel/water separator off and throw it away. That's certainly not what I did on my boat. I was just trying to help him figure out what was causing the problem. I suggested that...

    1991 Johnson GT 150 Seized?

You said after you lost all power, the motor was still running. After that the motor started up again. I'd drop the foot and see what difference that makes. I would put the control in neutral and see if you can spin the prop freely. My son had a 90 HP Johnson that started running very...

    Solenoid clicking.

The easiest test is to jump the solenoid and see if it spins. That should have been done before replacing any parts. Starter solenoid has two big terinals and two little terminals. When you turn the key, or push the button, the little terminals use a small current to make a connection between...

better to be at the low end or top end of RPM?

I've always preferred an aluminum prop. They're much lighter, so they're able to spin faster and since they have a slight bit of flex to them, I think it's better on the motor when accelerating quickly. I'm strictly a salt water guy, so there's little chance of stumps and logs and stuff for me...

73 Johnson 115 - Run away engine Questions

Were you running it with no water going to it? When you say you ran some seafoam through the engine, how exactly did you do that. Did you add some seafoam to a gallon of gas? Did that gas have oil mixed with it, or do you have oil injection? Did you have an overheat horn go off while it was...

    Randomly collapsing primer bulb?

I would start by replacing the fuel/water separator. That is also a filter that might have trash in it or be clogged somehow. That's a pretty easy $20 possible fix. A quick test would be to buy a barbed fitting and take the hoses off of the fuel/water separator and use the barbed fitting and...

    White Ground wire

It doesn't have to be a loop. Just add to the existing white wire and run it to all of the lights. The white wire gets it's ground from the tow vehicle. No need to connect back to the white wire.

    Raising the Transom?!

Yep, we've all been there! If it's your first boat, it will be amazing just being out on the water. Enjoy what you have, and one day when you have something bigger and better, you'll look back at this boat/motor set up and laugh at how much you enjoyed that little boat with the little motor...
