    1998 Johnson 90HP (J90TSLECM) voltage too high!!!

" I might just keep and rectifier on board in case." Good idea....not hard to change out if needed. Added one to mine several years ago....no problems yet. Lots of parts could fail and leave you adrift....so....your motor, your decision. CDI makes good stuff....would follow their directions...

    1991 Force 90hp starting problem

Take a look at the stickies at the top of this forum.....Force and Chrysler FAQ....there is info on T & T troubleshooting tips. Helps to isolate where the problem is.....lots of times it's the check valves in the valve body that cause a leak down problem. FYI

    1994 Force 120 HP Ser. # 0E089004

" That black wire runs over to a separate kill switch and wasn't hooked up. " Good job kbh.....looks like you figured it out. In this case, it will be a good thing if your motor quits running! lol

    1994 Force 120 HP Ser. # 0E089004

Looking at the diagram....the #1 wire coming out of the ignition switch is a black/yellow wire.....looks like it runs to a connector or something then turns into a single black wire that goes to the switch box....third position down from the top on the right side. It shows a ground wire for the...

    1998 Johnson 90HP (J90TSLECM) voltage too high!!!

"Simplicity" is good....one of the downsides of adding a VR is they can fail without warning....leaving you adrift.

    1998 Johnson 90HP (J90TSLECM) voltage too high!!!

All a rectifier does is convert AC to DC current.....so there is nothing wrong with them.....you want to lower the high voltage.....so try the voltage regulator/rectifier and see if there's a difference. IF you have 16 volts at idle it is probably higher at higher rpms. On my engine it spiked...

    1998 Johnson 90HP (J90TSLECM) voltage too high!!!

Is your installed OEM "regulator" the Sierra unit you bought? If so, it is a rectifier only.....no voltage regulation....maybe try the CDI unit and see if it lowers the volts. I would not wire them both up.

Struggling to install lower unit....Force 90Hp

Take the spark plugs out and the flywheel will turn real easy....like racerone said get a helper to turn it while you muscle the LU on. Good idea to at least remove the plug wires when moving the flywheel anyway.

    1998 Johnson 90HP (J90TSLECM) voltage too high!!!

If you look up that part # on the CDI website there is an installation PDF....it says to use the existing mounting bolts, so I reckon it mounts in the same spot. Doesn't say anything about adding a heat sink.

    1998 Johnson 90HP (J90TSLECM) voltage too high!!!

If you can add water to it then it's not a real maintenance free battery. Should be good.

    1998 Johnson 90HP (J90TSLECM) voltage too high!!!

https://forums.iboats.com/threads/if-you-have-high-charge-voltage-please-read.249235/ This thread has some info about your problem.....I did the conversion and it fixed my high voltage problem......also CDI says to only use regular lead acid batteries, no maintenance free, AGM, or dry cell...

Doing some research on adding tilt trim

The kingpin is what's holding the engine on....to remove it you would need a lifting eye mounted on top and a hoist.....major job. Do a search on here for "kingpin" and you will see what is involved.

    E85 in Chrysler outboard?

https://forums.iboats.com/threads/e15-and-no-rec-gas.755985/ This thread talks about how bad E15 is......E85 would probably kill an old Chrysler 2-stroke or any old outboard or small engine. If you are worried about the environment then get a 4-stroke engine.

    Force 85 trim

Good deal.....those tilt/trim motors usually outlive the outboard motor it is mounted on. Might check/clean the electrical connections...in the switch and the battery. Might be time for a new battery too. A bad battery could cause the clicking you heard....not enough juice to turn it over...
