Repowering my old 16ft aluminum boat thinking of going 4 stroke but have a question

I had the oppertunity to watch someone fix a carbed 100hp yamaha that had been dunked . He got it 2 days after is got dunked and it was only under for a few minutes ( boat ramp accident ) , and yes it was a lot of fiddling about , specially the 'letrix , but the only thing that gave grief was...

What is This? It has Mercury on it.

argh craparama here we go again ! I remember all the bickering over this topic last time , that planes use pitot tubes for airspeed .....and gps verses pitot , speed over ground verses water speed , but we were talking (old ) boats here , specifically "what is this? " :)

Repowering my old 16ft aluminum boat thinking of going 4 stroke but have a question

Whats your mechanical ability ? My plan is to buy a known tired 4 stroke ( poss x charter boat motor ... well serviced but high hours ) priced accordingly ( there are a few about here ) ,and fix it up . Another option that pops up here every now and then is an insurance sell off that had...

What is This? It has Mercury on it.

Its a speedo pick up ....water is forced up that tube and goes to a pressure gauge on the dash that has mph on the dial .....pretty old tech and notoriously innaccurate but better than nothing ...last century

    Someone else's outboard conversion fail

Im with Chris in that if its what you have and you need to make it work with a limited budget ( doesnt look like a high budget outfit ) job done . While you guys are standing round poo pooing it hes off fishing . yes servicing it might be a bit dificult but then a impeller can last 12...

    portable fuel tank quick disconnect

My main motovation was ....with both 2 and 4 stroke motors on the same boat , was to make sure one could not hook up the wrong tank and ruin the 2 stroke .:)

8hp Johnson idles well, but stumbles under load, sometimes

Yeah OK , what I would do is, firstly check that choke butterfly is closing , if it is, then with a cold motor , to open the carb bowl drain screw and let it drain out then squeeze the primer bulb and see just how quick the fuel starts to flow again ....the thinking being that we need to make...

8hp Johnson idles well, but stumbles under load, sometimes

Hard to start cold could be a choke issue....couple of things to check , The choke plate butterfly in the carb must be fully closed when the choke is on ....tight shut . An easy way to check if its a choke issue is to remove any silencer on the carb and place yor palm over the carb intake...

    Stuck Steering

Well send me one for a start  , but yeah , doesnt take much thinkin about . I guess you could remove the tilt tube with the steering rod still in there ( I had to dismount the motor to even get the pusher in place ) and then split the tilt tube with a cut-off wheel and save the steering...

    Stuck Steering

FFFFFar out , thats even worse than mine . I couldnt easily find another tilt tube for my motor and being that the steering rod was stainless and thusly most likely ok I made the pusher , and with a bit of heat I got it out . It wasnt so much corroded together as jammed by the corrosion...

The m is the dia in mm , but I have always called them double torx drive ( I know that aint the official term ) . Torx drives have 6 points these boys have twelve , and I can tell you if your trying to remove some twelve point torx headed head studs ....even tho a 6 point one will fit it...

    Snapped a rod

Good skills Flathead , bet that took a while . I do a few repairs but not at your skill level ....like mine look like repairs . Gotta say I a little disappointed tho  I thought I was going to see a snapped con rod

    portable fuel tank quick disconnect

I think that they are designed to be difficult to disconnect .... least they come off accidently . My Tohatsu has a push fit thing similar to an air line thats a push on pull off thing . Easy enough to replace sealing O rings when needed I had trouble with the outboard I fixed for them...

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Yeah , its not like they stretch a 50hp up to 70hp , they build a 70 hp and then detune it down to 50hp . Some things are hard to change ....like port timing or sizing , primary compression . :)
