Where to look for water leak

Also check the core plugs in the engine block, the clamps on the exhaust rubber hoses, Y pipe to inner transom joint This is one big issue with I/Os many places to leak water and most are inaccessible with the engine in place.

Sounds good remember it's always better to diagnose before changing parts.

    O2 sensor replacement

maybe ping Muc he may know. in the diagram it looks like one hose feeds the elbow and the other sends water into the stream after the elbow and there is a valve involved as well. Looks like if there was a problem with part #29 it could affect this. It's some kind of pressure control valve.

    O2 sensor replacement

You may have 2 separate problems, one the lean code, two the hot exhaust, they may or may not be related. I would first investigate the hot exhaust, that's certainly a common problem on inboard engines. I really doubt running lean, especially because you're not saying it's misfiring, it going to...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I discouraged my brother from buying a house near me that’s right above sea level! He got a nicer property in a neighboring town about 50’ above sea level. We do get wind though….

    O2 sensor replacement

If it got that hot in only 5 min either no water is getting fed to that elbow or it’s totally clogged. I have a raw water cooled older OMC/Volvo system on my V6 Cobra and at idle the exhaust on both sides is usually 95-100*F and this system has been used in salt water for 7 seasons, about 8 is...

    O2 sensor replacement

Actually in my experience spark plugs are easier by far to remove than O2 sensors. Watching fuel trims on the scanner would really help….

    O2 sensor replacement

You want to find out why that side of the exhaust is so hot, it could be a lean condition but without a scanner that reads live data it’s hard to tell. Exhaust systems do clog because of how cast iron corrodes (flakes off & clogs passages). You can look at the spark plugs on that bank and see if...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Lucky for us we live on top of a hill so we’re about 90’ above sea level. The part of our neighborhood by the boat yard I’m sure had flooding at high tide. Much of the south shore of LI is only about 10 feet above sea level. Those folks are going to have a real mess on their hands…

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I do the same thing with my boat & vehicles. For the boat I think I have 2-3 oil filters 2-3 fuel filters, a spare Prestolite points distributor, Quadrajet parts, 2 spare fuel pumps abs a bunch of OMC cobra spares. For the jeeps (4.0 Six and 5.7 Hemi) they both take the same oil filter so I...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

It already passed us, looks like it is making a u turn and passing south of Long Island heading toward NJ. I think the winds will peak here very early Sunday and after that will decline over the course of the day. On Friday night we had gusts as high as 60 knts. Lots of leaves all over the...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Ted you picked a good time to pull your boat! We had wicked winds and rain here on Long Island, starting last night into this morning, a classic Nor'easter....it's not going to get better till Sunday afternoon, about 16,000 people didn't have power here on Long Island, although we didn't lose...

Fuel pressure too high, how to fix? Small block GM V8

Now that’s interesting. So it ran high pressure at times but not all the time? What is it that was changing to cause that to happen….

Fuel pressure too high, how to fix? Small block GM V8

It has to do with the stiffness of the spring and rubber diaphragm, but your typical mechanical fuel pump isn't adjustable. I got lucky with the Sierra aftermarket pump in the pic above, it was putting out 5.5 psi, just about perfect for any carb.

For sure check the block deck, mine overheated but it was OK. the challenge with the 4.3 is all the variations that were present over time. if you look at the Pre-Vortec head list I posted, there are like 5 different versions of the same head, but some with different #s are listed as actually...

OMC 250 hp rough idle, back fires through carb on load

If a valve spring was weak, it makes sense that the intake valve might not close fully and then the ignited fuel/air mixture could travel backwards up into the intake manifold (where you hear the backfire) instead of staying in the combustion chamber where it belongs....

OMC 250 hp rough idle, back fires through carb on load

It might be worth getting the tool so you could check all the valve springs. Maybe replace the valve seals at the same time.

Not sure on those questions, exact match would be best assuming your other one is OK. Maybe ask machine shop, they may know. I’d guess if you find a matching pair of pre-Vortec heads it should work, I just don’t know for sure. Are you certain the other side isn’t cracked, both of mine were…
