Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

Check, clean, and/or reconnect black wire to ignition switch. Once your motor is running, it no longer uses battery power. Sometimes turning choke on will bog the motor down.

    New at this need help

I can't find it now, but I watched a video a few days ago trying to help someone out with replacing an ignition switch. The guy in the video said that a common after market ignition with 6 terminals would work fine, you just don't use the center one. He had an ignition switch with 5 terminals...

I cant get this throttle set up properly. Please advise.

It's been a long time since I've been inside one of those old OEM boxes, but I believe somewhere in there is a stop that only allows the throttle to go so far. Am I remembering correctly?

Little help Re grey oil hoses ,

I can't find much info without a model/serial number. My 115 yamaha has 2 small hoses that go to the breather (air box) cover on the carbs. I've been told that one or both of them are vent lines for the oil pump. When I forgot to connect one of the lines and left it dangling, it dripped some...

1995 force 70 hp ignition help

Your meter is much more sophisticated than what you need as a beginner. The Omega (horse shoe symbol at the top) is for testing ohms (resistance), the straight line with dashes underneath is for testing DC voltage. That's battery current. The squiggly line is for testing AC current, like...

    Old Johnson Powershift II 85hp

That's a great wiring diagram! Very simple and clear to understand. Wish I could find some like that when I have issues. Looks like the solenoid is grounded by the mounting surface, so giving 12v to either lead should activate it, right? To make sure, check resistance between the two wires...

Starter Solenoid On 2002 Johnson 40HP 4 Stroke

Your solenoid is "sticking" or your key switch is going bad. Straight full voltage "unstuck" the solenoid and after that they key switch and existing wiring was able to start the motor. I don't think it's a battery problem, but not sure Whether to replace key switch or solenoid. Next time it...

Starter Solenoid On 2002 Johnson 40HP 4 Stroke

The starter solenoid is an electromagnet. It takes low amperage wiring to power coils inside the cylinder to create a magnet to draw a plunger up to make contact between the two larger contacts that handle the higher amperage draw that the starter needs to turn the starter. The solenoid is...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

Guys, you need to read up a little on props. Alluminum props weigh about 1/3 as much as stainless. They spin faster because they're lighter. They flex under hard acceleration. Here's just a couple of prop experts: I don’t know about speed but RPM’s for sure. Aluminum has more flex so at...

Serial found but can't find reference year for Parts

I've done that and I can look up parts and stuff, but I don't think I ever got an actual year of the motor. Thanks though and I'll try again.

    Rebuilt Carburetor… Still No Idle!

Idle speed is not set by timing. Idle speed is set by the idle adjusting screw. If you follow the link and sync correctly, you set the timing and carb adjustments separately. Yes, the timing and the opening of the carbs are syncronized together, but timing does not determine idle speed. I...

What is this part called on Force 125

Google the specs for link and sync for your motor. You should find simple steps that won't require a tach. Basically, it's making the carburetors open when they are supposed to and the timing advance when it's supposed. Contrary to another response, it will also explain how to set idle timing...

    Need propeller suggestions

He initially stated that his max RPM's were 4200. It wasn't until later that he told us about his "magic ears" being able to tell the RPM's by sound alone. I will have to admit, I've wasted a lot of money on props that didn't do what I was looking for. When I give prop advice, I'm trying to...

1995 force 70 hp ignition help

I'm sure you can find the specs for your motor and the testing procedures for each one of those items online As fas as reading resistance in ohms, your setting will depend on what you're looking for. If the spec says your reading should be between 1 and 6, put the setting on a low setting. If...

1990 90HP Pontoon, 4300 RPM at WOT, Do I need a new prop?

Switching to an aluminum prop, even with the same pitch, would get your RPM's up and - in my experience - would actually get you a little increas in speed. I'm guessing a 17 pitch same size aluminum prop would get you to about 4600 RPM's and probably get that tube going 22 MPH. It's amazing to...

Serial found but can't find reference year for Parts

That's a great trick, but how did you get there. I have the same probem with an old 9.9 mercury. If you google Mercury and the model number, you get no results. How did you get to that page?
