    lower unit/ impeller gasket seals

The shift shaft bushing with the seal should unscrew from the gearcase. I ground down a 1/2" black pipe connector into a spanner to unscrew the bushing, but you can unscrew it with a punch as well. Test the gearcase with a few PSI of air pressure and some soapy water to determine where the...

    Leaky boat

What kind of engine? If I/O, there are lots of places for water to leak into the bilge. If outboard, there are less places for leaks to occur, with the engine mounting bolts, and thru hull fittings being the most likely. Also, look for small cracks in the hull. The strake on my SeaRay...

    lower unit/ impeller gasket seals

You will want to pressure test the gearcase to determine what is leaking. You can use a bicycle pump and the tube from the lube pump to do that. Often the shift shaft seal leaks.

Why does gearcase have threads and bolts?

The grooves in my '98 Johnny 150HPV6 60* motor are concentric. That begs the question why? Maybe an expandible jig to install something or test something in the gears.

    HYDROFOIL

Baja's are performance boats. Performance boats usually have plenty of power and do not need whale tails. The whale tails are normally used on underpowered and stern heavy boats. They can create extra drag if not installed properly, or if the motor is not installed at the correct height. On...

    Automotive Diagnostic Tool

Gee, a noisy belt tensioner is usually pretty easy to diagnose. It usually sounds like a squirrel taking a beating under the hood. When was the last time you replaced your spark plugs?

Why does gearcase have threads and bolts?

Right, the Johnson gearcase just has the threads like a Mercury OB gearcase. My OEM service manual shows the 5/16" threaded rod and puller as the correct tool to pull the bearing carrier.

    Steering cable stuck?

Spray the steering rod and wipe it off until it is clean. If someone banged on the end of the steering rod, it could be mushroomed. That would need filing or sanding to get it small enough to pass thru the tube.

Why does gearcase have threads and bolts?

There are threads in the gearcase housing, exactly where Mercury puts theirs, to hold the bearing carrier nut. I was not able to find a bearing carrier puller that uses those threads. All of them that I found had hooks for the bearing carrier plus the center bolt to push on the propshaft.

Mercury 115 2 stroke won’t idle and runs rough.

A real clean spark plug can be a sign of water infiltration into the cylinder. Did you tell us the year of this motor? Is it a 2+2 motor?

Why does gearcase have threads and bolts?

My '98 Johnny 150HPV6 (60*) has bolts holding the bearing carrier, plus unused threads at the terminal end of the thru hub exhaust housing. Any idea why those threads are there? Maybe for a bearing carrier puller? I have threads on my Merc gearcase (as is usual), which hold "doughnut" shaped...

Has anyone used the ready lime (not the brand name) to descale their outboard

Of course, the maker of the ready lime product says it will not damage gaskets and rubber parts. Dangar Marine did a test where he soaked corroded cylinder heads and other parts in vinegar, salt-away and 20::1 HCL. The HCL solution was the strongest and it did not damage an impeller he...

I want to place a metal patch on a Zinc-Coated steel gasoline tank opening.

You might consider a metal fuel line. A long rubber fuel line across the yard has the potential for damage and subsequent leaks under gravity feed. Inboard boat motors often use metal fuel lines. Coils of soft copper tubing are avail at the home despot's of the world. They are compatible...

    Mercury 135 not running

One more thing that occurred to me. The motor will not crank at the ign key when at WOT. You will still need to jumper the starter solenoid. Your kid is unemployed, I am afraid.

I want to place a metal patch on a Zinc-Coated steel gasoline tank opening.

Are you planning a gravity feed of the gasoline to the generator, or some kind of fuel pump?

    Mercury 135 not running

21*BTDC at cranking speed is the max spark advance spec for my '93 135V6. Sure, your son can help, if inclined. Mine is usually not inclined.

    Mercury 135 not running

Remove spark plugs 2-6. Put timing light on topmost cylinder. It should be obvious which one it is. Gearcase can be on or off. If on, remove prop to keep it from chopping your feet. Idle pickup timing is 0-9* ATDC, and is set when the carbs are ready to open, but still closed. WOT timing is...

I want to place a metal patch on a Zinc-Coated steel gasoline tank opening.

Yes, gas tanks were sealed until maybe the late seventies. The vapor pressure of gasoline is only so much. Tanks in those days were built to survive it.
