    Stupid me, no oil

Boat was under water , if you look around drain plug there is little to no glass on bottom of wood may have soaked it then. if it doesn’t go far not sure I would worry

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

A couple of things maybe to look at before diving into carb Empty the fuel filter into a jar and look for debris and water contamination Is your timing at spec What do the spark plugs look like ? Cap and rotor in good shape ? Wires? Is choke opening fully and have you tried adjusting idle...

Help me identify what engine I have in my new boat

Oh yeah it would seem he is full of chit. Unless it was a 2bbl carb then going to 4 bbl yes would expect more power. See what he gives you and go from there. if it is a q jet that is unmolested core then you have something. for sure a new one will be bolt on and go, really probably depends on...

Help me identify what engine I have in my new boat

More than likely there was something wrong with the old carb. Sounds like if it wont idle idle passages are clogged or set too lean. at 1000 rpms you are into the transition circuit which supplies gas between when throttle gets past the idle ciruit and the boosters haven't taken over yet (around...

    3.0 mercruiser dieseling

Around 2003 they went to 160 for emissions reasons. My carbed engine if that vintage has 160

    3.0 mercruiser dieseling

Agreed 650 or so, tach may be off. If it stalls in gear could be timing or idle mix issue. If your engine runs a 160 thermostat this is ok, if it’s a 140 it’s getting a tad hot. What year is engine.

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

Fire sure they are in the system. If you have ps they will be in the cooler, otherwise end up in thermostat housing. Best to use oem impellers in my experince. If exhaust got hot water tube maybe have melted rubber ends and fallen off or was misplaced when reassembled. If water wasn’t flowing up...

Help me identify what engine I have in my new boat

No idea if they ship north of the border or if your core will save you the $150 core charge.. https://flyingfishcarburetors.com/Y43-291-57L-Mercruiser-Inboard.htm the webber used on mercs is identical to the edlebrock.

    riser bolts too long

Its not rocket surgery, if you are a decent shade tree mechanic with some tools, get the factory engine and drive manuals and ask questions here. X2 what bondo said internal motor parts are stock GM stuff. the accessories that go on the long block are marine specific items. These engines are...

    4.3 milk maker

Yes the valley under intake. Attached are pics from the 4.3 that was in my boat when i bought it. PO had not winterized used it a bit and then had same milkshake coming out valve covers. I bought it as a handyman's special You can see cracks just below the heads. You can confirm this by...

    3.0 mercruiser dieseling

All above are good suggestions. Would also maybe fatten the idle mix. I decarbonized it by using GM top engine cleaner( others will work as well), seemed to help need to be careful with the dieseling eng8ne can run backwards and suck water up into it

    4.3 milk maker

You winterized it or seller did? Unfortunately x 2 on not winterized and freeze cracked the block. Normally they crack in lifter valley below the heads also possible water cross over in intake is cracked. check exhaust manifolds for cracks as well

    Stupid me, no oil

I don't think there is enough permatex #3 to overcome dunking the motor mounts in saltwater.. The fact that the inner sleeve was tight enough on the bolt to yank the rubber mount out of the flywheel cover tough to plan for.... I'll have to check my hardin O2 plate as well. I'm in fresh water...

Help me identify what engine I have in my new boat

There's one in every crowd... With Edlebrock on a merc you can use the factory throttle cable bracket (p/n 805359T) off the 357 crate motors for a factory appearance (and mounting for the 50 amp breaker and starter slave relay on some like mine). Would assume holley + VP would be the same

    Mercruiser 120 poor starting

Dump some gas down carb bores and it should fire up if not it’s not a fuel issue. You can take fuel line off carb crank it over and should pump into a jug .

Help me identify what engine I have in my new boat

HP on the. 4 bbl pre vortecs like yours were 260 hp. This assume the cam is stock marine or truck/rv which it most likely is verify your starter is marine which normally say J11 xxx on it forget the exact numbering. Your ignition is a merc Thunderbolt V so you are good there

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

yeah typically Ive seen with a 140 thermostat the engine runs 150-155, my newer boat with a 160 is 170-175 depending on lake temp. If you have an IR gun check temps, likely the gauge is a little inaccurate- they are just made for an in the ballpark indication.
