MerCruiser model 496 MAG (H.O.) 425 HP loss of power

Do a cylinder drop test via software when it is acting up. We found 3 partially plugged injectors on a 2006 496 HO that started as an occasional issue like yours then eventually became a full time problem. We chased it for about a month. Eventually did the cylinder drop test and identified 3 bad...

Lot more new boaters and large wakes?

I understand the wake boat craze, although I was bored after about 10 minutes of doing it behind a friends boat. I agree though, many of the wakeboat operators are careless with their wakes and damage it causes.

496 mag HO double beep alarm

Is it a double beep alarm that keeps going off every minute or two? That is typically a failing sensor. If you have mechanical shift and throttle I would look at the IAC first. Unplug it and see if the issue goes away. That bugger is the most failed sensor. Second I would look at the neutral...

Has anyone tried Triax ATLAS 600 grease?

No responses. Did you ever use it? On paper it is the best grease for trailer bearings based on wear scores and water washout numbers.

MerCruiser 496 HO 2008 - Engine Alarm (constant sound)

Looks like a manifold over temp alarm. Gauges could read ok temperature or slightly high, manifold temp is not displayed. Bad impeller, clogged water inlet, bravoitis, clogged heat exchanger, - lots of potential causes.

    Question about engine oil

I never recommended an automotive oil, just simply pointed out the false statement about them being inferior. They can be and sometimes are every bit as good as the fc-w oils. In some cases, they are far superior for high pressure wear prevention as almost all FC-W oils are catalyst compatible...

    Question about engine oil

Just not true. There are many automotive and diesel oils that would surpass the requirements set forth by the FC-W spec. I have read the spec, it is nothing special as far as the requirements set. What is obtrusive is the need to purchase a Yamaha outboard, then run it on the specified oil, just...

    Question about engine oil

The cold weather only thickens the oil while cold, and as soon as it warms up it thins again. you are absolutely fine.

Chips in hull of new boat. Used it twice. How serious?

Those are down to the substrate. There is a chance water will wick up into that layer.

Chips in hull of new boat. Used it twice. How serious?

I would not put the boat in water until those are fixed.

    Leaking Antifreeze after Winterizing

Your method was severely flawed. It is unlikely you have antifreeze in the critical areas of the motor, it is much more likely you have water with some antifreeze mixed in, and not even remotely capable of freeze protection. At this point, you would be much better off draining it completely and...

Air don't freeze... RV antifreeze DOES!

Of course it freezes. -75 isn’t the freeze number, it is the burst point number, says it on the container. It is the temperature where it will expand and burst the media they declare. The manufacturer gets to pick what media they want to declare for the rating as there are no standards that...

Lowe Legacy taking on water !

Dealer issue, but if you want to troubleshoot, in the driveway place a hose in the bilge and start adding water, look for the leak OUT of the boat. Now I make this recommendation without knowing or seeing your particular boat so there could be reasons you don’t want to do this. You need to assess.

    Marine oil VS Standard Synthetics

There will be no advantage to a full synthetic for your application. More important is the correct viscosity and an applicable additive pack. Stop overthinking this. Keep using what you were, it is fine, or switch to a quality 15w40 diesel rated oil, not an API rated one.
