Re: 11' Runabout build

azonic, I purchased the plans from Glen L www.boatdesigns.com all the prices are posted on their website. If you want to know anything else ask the questions on this thread so others who may have the same questions will have them answered. I probably could have gotten further along in two weeks but the wife had me busy with remodeling the spare bath so no real progress in the last week.

Thanks for the info..

On a personal note...

I only asked for it to be in a private message so you could keep money issues private if you wished too..

Thanks for sharing..

I really like this idea!!

I am about 75 years away from being experienced enough to do it though...

Re: 11' Runabout build

well I am back at it again. trimmed the excess behind the transom. I am waiting for a delivery of glass bubbles and silica to start the filleting process. I also need to start on cutting the sheer members, the lumber I have is pretty dry hopefully they will bend without breaking.

On a side note I have no real wood working experience other than the occasional deck or other diy project. so pretty much anyone can do this.

I also have no problem answering any questions anyone may have money related or other wise, we are all pretty much insane for spending so much money on these projects so ask away.

Re: 11' Runabout build

Once you get this one finished and find out how much you enjoy building boats, you might prefer building on a jig and do as little on the floor as you possibly have to. "Stitch and glue" kits generally aren't built on a jig, but they are so much easier on the 'ole bod if you fabricate a waste level platform on casters to build them on. I've built my share. Do you intend to finish it natural? You might look into lofting your next boat. It's an old craftsmen's dying art and we always need someone else to keep it alive. Keep up the great work.

Don't worry,200 lb boat with300 lb of merc and gas,I did leaps and bounds to keep the bow light. She jumps outta the hole like a rabbit and trims out jus' fine.

Re: 11' Runabout build

Today I cut and planed the sheer members and after one broken sheer, 2 broken harbor freight clamps, lots of beer and even more cussing the sheers are temporarily in place. I plan to back a few screws out at a time put thickened epoxy behind and re screw the sheer. It was pretty frustrating trying to bend them. They are 5/8" x 1" and were pretty tough to bend, I am not looking forward to trying to bend the cockpit carling it is 3" to 4" wide and 1" thick it is going to be a pita. But I have plenty of time till I am ready to try that. tomorrow I am going to start cutting the 1300 biaxel to start filleting the seams and laying in the keel and hull batten laminations.

Re: 11' Runabout build

So last week I applied some epoxy it was pretty cool out and it was taking forever to set up, so while I was waiting on my shipment of silica and microballons I decided to insulate my garage so I could put a heater in there and be nice and toasty when it gets cooler. That meant taking down all the shelves the previous owner put up ( without a level) and all the pegboard that was put up wrong none of the edges landed out on the studs and all the cutouts for the electric boxes were ragged an way oversized, just small things that bothered me everytime I went in the garage. And of course my shipment showed up the day after I started, typical. so any way here is some progress.

I got the sheers glued and re screwed and put down some epoxy on the chine so the ply wood wont scavenge the resin out of my pb

while I was waiting for the chines to tack up I got out my roll of 1300 biaxial it is 13 oz cloth with no mat stitch on
S6300318.jpg

S6300319.jpg

Cut some 3" strips to glass the chine after it is filleted
S6300320.jpg

still not cured enough to start filleting so I ripped cut and radiused the keel laminations
S6300321.jpg

after all that my "scratch coat was tacky enough to finally tack fillet the sides to the bottoms
S6300322.jpg

next I will remove the wire stitches sand and lay down some smooth fillets

Re: 11' Runabout build

this is a shot of the stem area i decided to add a few extra layers in this area that were not in the plans, so that the bow hook will have some extra strength
S6300329.jpg

here is the 8" piece that went on last I added an extra 3" the 5" in the plans another 3" and a5"
S6300332.jpg

the 1300 biaxial was pretty easy to work with and came out without any air bubbles and I pretty pleased with it

Re: 11' Runabout build

Thanks - your thread may end up costing me money. I have a couple sets of old plans from a Fawcett Publication called "How To Build 20 Boats" and I may try my hand at building one up... Nice work!!

I did notice, though, that you have a long shaft motor and I am pretty sure your transom is for a short shaft. That could be an issue when it comes time to rig things up....

Re: 11' Runabout build

this thread is going to cost me money in the long run too...

I want to build one of the "Florida Flats Flyer" boats so bad I can taste it...

Actually, it is a toss up between a 12" version of your boat or the Flyer...

Maybe both in the long run.... Might be smart to start with a nice small boat...

Love the progress!!

Sorry for costing you money but your 13 GW thread was very influential to my choice for a small runabout. I always liked the 10 footers but couldnt find any around my area so I decided to build.

The transom is 21" from top to keel it looks low in the photos. a 15" transom would almost be completely straight across the back
