I took the day yesterday to drive about an hour north where there are lots of used/vintage boat shops. Looked at a couple of bow lights, one that I thought that I loved, but after up close & personal, was too big. After careful exam of the bow/cap, I don't think "bigger is better" in this case, so disregard my email Gus. Chalk it up to anesthesia overdose...I will need some area behind the bow light for a cleat. Will keep looking (and probably changing my mind)..Did score a nice blue sunbrella/Taylor made tarp yesterday for the boat when it's done. $50 & in good shape. Sure it will outlast $50 worth of HF tarps, especially in our weather. Healing is in progress. Back to work one handed for a short while last night. That was interesting! Back again today. Little sore, swelling, can feel the stitches burning a bit, but I have yet to take a pain pill, not even a Tylenol! Brave or stupid???? Hope all is ready for a great Fri-der-day!!! and an even better wknd!....(minch...I'm still in the game for your light offer...just exhausting all other options...of which there are few)

Glad to hear you're on the mend. My last injection seems to have done the trick. As I said I really asked the Doc to try and Pinpoint the Pain Zone and stick the needle exactly in the spot which he did cuz it hurt like crazeeeee!!! But, It's been 6 weeks and I've been doing LOT's of stuff and so far it's not "Triggered" One time. I consider myself a Lucky Man!!! I sincerely hope your surgery is a Raging Success and Next week you'll be good as new!!!

Thanks Sam..I'll look into this. Wood..I'm glad to hear you are good to go with the thumb. I hope I have same success. Worked all day, & must admit, very sore tonight. Swollen...needs rest & elevation. My plan for tomorrow is to only get out of bed for more food! Did you get your engine workin? Carbs?

Thanks to all my iboats candy stripers(we old timers remember candy stripers/hospital....not to be confused with candy strippers, Gus!)...I am grateful to have people like you guys that show genuine care/compassion...Just wanted to say a big iboats THANK YOU for the well-wishes...Went to the dr today..stitches will have to wait another wk to come out. Site looks clean & not infected. He was a little disappointed that I still was unable to bend it too much. Sent me home with strict instructions to touch my thumb to my pinky finger tip(which is hard enough...then slide the thumb down the pinky towards the palm of my hand. Able to only get to first joint, but now that the bulky bandage is off, I will be doing this as often as I can for the next wk. Baby steps...Again...thanks so much!! Lisa

Just talking to the girls over at Ouachita thread...requesting an update...so here goes. Well, I haven't been grinding, faring, gelcoating, non-skid decking, seat installing...nothing, zip, zilch, big fat zero....so I want each and every one of you to tell my doctor I've been a very good girl. Actually, it's hotter than heck here & I'm kinda getting used to doing nothing. The thumb is ok. Back to the dr. this Wednesday for stitches to come out. Bending is just as much, if not more of a chore than before. Hopefully, that will get better with time. Swelling has been an issue (which could be affecting the bending). that's as far as she bends.
But just because the thumb don't work doesn't mean my credit card doesn't................ Like Christmas in July! Well, I sure this will look better out of the package and on my keel, but I'm gonna wait another week before I even think about putting it on. Maybe I'll do the scuffbuster on the bow mid-week so I feel like I'm cheating...I hope you all are either working on, fishing in, or snorkeling under your boats this wknd!! Be safe..................

Well it seems the card works just fine ! And for your right appendage . If no grinding ,glassing , gellcoating and what not can not be performed .. Then it looks perfectly positioned for some south florida frosty beverage type of glass .. Something cold and fruity would be my choice ! :joyous:
But leave out the little umbrella .. Those could put your eye out after a few to many ! ;)

Thumbs up all around for a nice score on the keelguard and for a speedy return to a fully functioning digit...

Finally have some news to report. I started earlier in the wk getting the deck sanded down, ready for gel. Slow going as I was trying to only work left-handed. Not as easy as you think. As we restore our boats, you know how we have that one part that we just wished we had spent our time, more diligently preparing a surface or taping off an edge, or who knows what...My main deck made me a little nervous as it had a bit of a dip in it where the main 8' section ended and the smaller v-shaped forward section began. I never spent adequate time getting that union more level. Wish I had. Anyways....despite the fact that I didn't need it perfect as non-skid/in the way of sand sprinkled on wet gel would be coming, I spent a little time this wk faring, sanding, faring, sanding....to the point my knees both have bleeding blisters the size of quarters. I finally started the rolling gel on Tuesday. 2 thin coats of white first
Then 2 coats of gray Waited for son and girlfriend to join in as high temps would make it difficult for me to roll and sprinkle without kick occurring. Next layer of gray, followed by sand Finally, after blowing off & vacuuming out excess sand, last 2 coats of gray with wax . I am fairly satisfied with the end result. As before mentioned, still a few imperfections, but I hope to have the deck so covered in fish blood/guts that they will remain invisible....to me at least. The edges turned out good, nice hard lines with few imperfections. Off the next couple of days so gonna get back at it. Our mutual good iboats buddy, almincha sent me a birthday present, a day late, but very much appreciated. I have a bow light that I will begin some work on tomorrow, working on either the possibility of a shine or ready for paint of some sort. Might also try to get the keel guard on over next few days. Good to be back to work on it. Need to harass my buddy about the transom plate so I can get the engine on. Then busy on those seats. His time frame doesn't seem to be coinciding with mine. More as I make some progress. Happy almost Fri-der-day!!

Wow, It really looks nice, and sounds like a lot of work! I'm planning to gelcoat the sole of my boat when I get to that point, and was a little surprised to hear how many coats you applied. I was hoping to get by/be happy with two rolled on coats. In my case a bit of the gelcoat will be under the cockpit in the engine space, and the rest (about 10 X 12) will be inside the cabin. Am I dreaming, or would 2 coats be adequate in my case.

Glad you`re able to get back at the project, hope your thumb is healing well.

Holy cow !! That looks like ya laid a piece of carpet down ! For a one handed chick you sure do some mighty fine work !
Ok lets recap ..
That was 2 coats white , 2 coats grey. A wet layer of grey with sand followed by 2 more coats grey with wax ..
End result awesome looking non-skid decking ..
What type sand did you use ?

Thanks jig...I'm just trying to do half as good as you boys! Psycho-as you can see in the first pic, 2 coats of white didn't even come close to covering. I did thin the gel with styrene at about 10%. I used the white kinda like a primer, knowing that the gray would cover better after. I surely could have stopped at the 2 plus 2 mark, but needed to add the sand, which by the way Sam, was just common beach sand. Had my helpers been there earlier in the day, probably would have added the sand after the first coat of gray, then top with a couple, but I'm just winging it. I have no proof that this method is going to be successful in the long run. My son tried Kiwi Grip in his last build and at $70 a quart, I was not impressed nor have I been since his splash. Don't think it holds up well at all. He later used the sand method on some wood flooring inserts he custom made for his little 14' polarcraft aluminum, which you can often see in the background of some of the pics on this thread. He had already tried the resin only and we now know that doesn't stand up to weather for long. He ground it down, used/experimented with the gel/sand and it has held up nicely for a couple of years. In addition, this boat sits out in direct Florida sun, at all times. I figured it's worth a shot...and saved me some moolah, too! The worse that can happen, if it doesn't hold up....I'll grind it off and lay it or something else again. I know the structure of the boat will hold...just trying to protect it from the outside and make it look like something I can be proud of. I guess I can be the guinea pig/pioneer of this method and like most crash test dummies...offer another option..if it works. The one thing that does concern me is the likelihood of staining. Sam and I have discussed this before. It seems rolled on gel stains quite easily and I have yet to figure out how to seal it to prevent this. Hey, like I said...things could be worse...as long as it's fish slime/blood that is doin' the staining!

Thanks for the info, very helpful. How many gallons of gelcoat did you end up using on your floor? Just trying to figure how far my one gallon is going to go, I got it from an industrial supplier and there is no info on the can, just the product name, so I have no way to calculate how much I'll need, no idea what to use for thinning, how much hardener to use, etc.

I bet your floor will hold up really well, and stains just add character.
