Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

I am currently debating the same thing. My kids vote for something with a giant sharks mouth, teeth and all, on the bow. That is in the running but I am thinking of white on bottom and then a solid deep blue that covers 2 1/2 or 3 panels down. Instead of following the lines of the aluminum and the stripe getting narrower as it goes towards the bow, I am thinking of keeping the line the same width all around the bow. I saw this recently on another boat and thought it looked kind of unique. I am sure I will know more in the near future as she is flipped today.

I do like the colors but I think it should be toned down a little. Stripe? Just don't know yet. Maybe with a dark blue accent,

Same here, how about maroon and dark blue? Cream color on lower hull.

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

I really need some help/advice guys. Last Sunday I cleaned, taped and prepped the boat for priming. I sprayed the bottom hull with ZC (dusting) then I rolled the Rustoleum Aluminum primer on the whole boats exterior. It was in the mid 80's and low humidity. The humidity did rise as the afternoon approached due to very slight chance of rain. I did the painting in my garage. On Monday I rolled it out into the sun to bake for three days. This afternoon when I got home (Wednesday) some of the primer can be scratched off with a fingernail very easily. I was going to sand and re-coat with primer once more, but now I'm worried the paint isn't sticking. Prior to painting I blew off with air, and wiped the whole thing down with acetone. Any ideas what I may have done wrong? Suggestions? Thanks

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

Thanks Kenny. I had read in another post that Rustoleum had not done research with other primers so they didn't know about compatability. Thats why I primed the whole thing with their alum primer. Maybe I'm just not giving enough time. I want to sand and re-prime once more before paint.

I would think their aluminum primer would be meant to go over aluminum not ZC. I think you needed one or the other and not both. If you want to prime over the ZC their "Clean Metal Primer" may have been a better choice. (Just a guess from a tard who's paint is falling off)

Carp!! It looks like I'm back to square one. I just checked the primer again and if a branch were to rub the side, the paint scrapes off??? I guess I have to remove it, which apparently won't be hard, and try again. I don't understand though, the Starchief went fine. EZ, I just dusted with the ZC on the bottom only. Its harder to scratch than the sides but it still will come off.

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

That sucks. The aluminum primer has gotta be your problem. I DO still think you should prime over the ZC, just don't use that aluminum stuff. Primer should have a little "build" to it to help hide minor scratches and what not. The finish coats won't do much of that at all, at least my Easypoxy didn't.

Being latex you can probably pressure wash it off and use Goof Off to get any of the stubborn spots.

At least your paint didn't wait to fail till you have your motor and interior done!!!

EZ I was truly unhappy about your paint but it was your experience that has me paying close attention to mine. That is the reason for the questions. If I need to do something different (as it seems) then now is the time before I right side it and start on interior. I was hoping for paint by this weekend, but.....

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

I finally found some time for myself so I got back to work on the boat. I had been wanting to use my pressure washer to get the primer off, but unfortunately I ran into a problem. Here where I live has not had any rain so now we are on emergency water restrictions. The lake where we get our water from is down over 12 feet and declining. Its also the lake where I have fished for over 40 years. I went there this morning and took some pictures, it broke my heart.

This is where I launch my boat in the background left. The creek you see is normally 15' deep. Now its 6".

This was a big cove I fish a lot.

I got out my instruments of destruction together to start again.

I thought the primer coat looked good. Too bad it didn't stick.

I started with the drill and wire brush. Actually that is all I used. It was slow and I was surprised that some would come off like removing polishing compound.

Here are the last two pics. I still need to get some more ZC spray paint tomorrow and spray it.

It did stick to the JB i had applied. Notice my own JD that I used while stripping. Not as fancy as NB's but it works. :D

Not going to do this again. I am going with Interlux I believe.

Those photos of your local fishing spot are crazy, wow! What a bummer!

Looks like a lot of hard work is behind you with stripping that paint, well done man!

Throw a front end loader on that little JD of yours and you'd be in business:D
