Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

Yeah the lake bums me out. The boats progress (finally) cheers me up though. I have a question asked by thousands...what type/manufacturer of ZC does everyone use and where do I get it? I re-read NB's LL thread and the CC one, but no mention. Also NB used Petite on the sides of LL but is using interlux now? What type EXACTLY is the primer and is it ok for different manufactures paints? I am trying to ZC today if possible and maybe even prime (if I can find what I need)

From where I am sitting at the moment I can't see my ZC can but I do know that Napa was about the only one that carried it locally for me.

Hi Dale, I used the brand{can't recall brand name} from the local Murray's/O'Rilley's store.

Moellers is the ZC brand Dale. And the primer/paint is petitt easypoxy. I have no experience with anything else.

Sorry to see the water gone, hope things get straightened out before too long:eek:

The upside to all this extra work on the rig is that you are really getting to know the hull and bonding is important at her age:D

I was just wondering the same thing on the zinc primer, I found a couple different brands and the stores seemed to know little if anything about it.

I ended up using a Krylon self-etching spray can on my little boat.

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

Thanks a ton gentlemen. I've been reading a lot and decided to go for it. Take a look and tell me (PLEASE) if you see any problems with my choices.

I made a 1 1/2 hr trip this morning a picked that stuff up. I still have some JB patching ( little corrosion) I need to do. Then clean it good and ZC.

Me and the boat have been bonding allright. It's been a learning experience but hey, I have a lot more I can mess up yet to come.;)

No sense in waiting around. Just don't seem right. I scraped and grinded all the original green paint off so I could do what? Apply more green...ZC this time. :D

Wouldn't you know it. Now we are expecting rain...a lot. At least I can lightly sand the ZC and get ready for the undercoat. And I was on a roll...sorta.:p

I like your choices. I think i'll be making the same choices only purchasing online with shipping.

2 questions please.

I see you have chosen interlux for the thinner, and primer ..

1. what paint are you going with for topside. ( brightsides i assume )
2. what paint are you going for the the very bottom? ( i was thinkin interlux VC for my tinny ) .

thanks

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

I used Interlux VC on the bottom as well. Real tough stuff. You'd have a hard time trying to scratch so it should hold up really well.

I should have done more sanding on the high build primer but rain was coming so I just rolled it. The stuff was thin enough that it probably would spray real well.

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

You are right Chrisp, Brightside and VC. I was going with Rusto but decided after stripping this boat twice it would be a good idea to bite the bullet and go with a better (and more expensive) paint. I am like everyone else, money is tight but I plan on taking this boat with me to the afterlife:eek: I guess some things I won't want to skimp on. Some of you guys have set the standard high and I'm stretching just to reach the middle.:p
Sprintst, what is the drying time for VC? How soon after its applied can I put the boat back on the trailer?

Dale, I think the rule is, the longer you can wait, the better off you are. And the ZC needs 48 hrs before recoating or primer.

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

Thanks for the great thread, I'm learning from all the great free advice here for when I get to my painting. At this point my plan is to go with Pettit high-build primer and Easypoxy, but not sure I'll need to strip to bare aluminum. I think most of the bottom paint is sound. I'll know better when I finally get it flipped.

Like you I plan to have this boat forever and beyond, so I need all the advice I can get. I also hate doing things twice so I want to get it "good enough" the first time.

Nice work!

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

Thanks guys but I am just using the advice and information I got here too.:D
LL, if the paint is solid you can leave it and just use ZC on the bare aluminum spots. The undercoater will adhere to original paint.
I agree with you too, "good enough" is never accepatable. Its either right or not. Thats why I had to strip the other primer:mad:

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

Very simple and quick update. If you had read my thread you remember me crying about the lake and lack of rain. Well, the Good Lord provides. We got around 6" in a short time and the lake is up 3-4 feet.:D Bad news is I can't paint when its raining. I did get out there this morning and painted the Interlux Pre Coat. Another color for the boat and another step!

I have been looking for another motor for this boat and I have time still before I'm ready but I was thinking of my motor off the bass boat. Whatdaya'll think?
