Re: 1956 Johnson Javelin Water flow question

Well, I'm converted. Looks like a Javelin powerhead. Cut off switch is upside down, but that's the only thing that doesn't look right to me.

Someone has obviously done some work to it. Maybe they swapped powerheads, but it doesn't matter. You can easily restore it to original if you so choose. If you do you will need the manual throttle lever and cover pictured below. The cover and lever isn't unique to the Javelin so its not hard to find.

I have a parts manual for that motor. PM me your email address and I'll email you a copy.

Its only for back up throttle control on remote steer rigs. Remember it wasn't originally tiller steer so in order to return it to original you'd have to convert it back.

I have no plans on doing anything to this motor but getting it to run and maybe painting it..

If i found another motor with similar HP that ran good and i could buy it with the money i make on this one id sell it and let someone who appreciates it restore it.

The Javelin is a sought after motor. What is your model number? I don't think you have Javelin. The 1956 has a red (Holiday Bronze) midsection and lower unit. Also, I don't believe the Javelin was offered with a tiller handle. Your motor is white even below the re-paint and has a tiller handle. Also, the tiller grip looks like a 1957-58. You probably have a 35 hp hiding under the cowl.

Yes get the water level up, but you should still replace the impeller. Especially, if you ran it for any length of time without it in the water.

Your motor should like Steve's.

That "D cell battery" sized thing is your choke solenoid. It operates the choke only when using remote controls.

3/4 of a turn might be a little lean on the low speed jet. Standard start position is 1.5 turns out from gently seated. The top jet is the low speed and the bottom is the high.

True he has some parts finagled but I had a 56 tiller Javelin.Didn't appear to have been changed.

so does this motor seem to be that same as your tiller Javelin?

Yes it does and I don't believe you can convert a remote Javelin to tiller without changing the belly pan.One of the pictures someone posted shows
the remote style tiller stump. Not adaptable to a tiller.

what pump you buy depends on what method of conversion you want to do. Both will work. All the details have been given to you. You need to read the instructions given to you and try. We can help you out if you need it, but we cannot do it for you. Unless you are in the St Louis area and then I would be glad to help you.

Actually, I think it can. It looks like a simple swap when I compare my Javelin to my 25 hp Big Twin. The "stump" is only held on by a single screw and a tab. Looks like the tiller arm should bolt right in. Later models can't do it, but I believe this one can.

I certainly can't argue if tiller steer was an option ,but it still doesn't explain the white. Could have been stripped and repainted. I don't know.
