Hey Buddy, What kind of hole are you trying to fill? Pin/Small/big?

How are you going to manage em'?

I have a bunch to do myself and I am really glad you guys are ahead of me so I can see what need to be done!

Cheers Buddy!

And I agree about the hair coming in at places it didn't used to be, unfortunatly I know where mine is coming from, the top 'O my head:eek: Now I'll save on haircuts but spend more in sunblock for the top of my head.:confused: Well, the wifes gone to work and I'm home with a bad back..think I'll sneak out and work on the boat, shhhhh.:rolleyes:

Nice pick up! I might be in your area. How far north of Detroit are you? I might be able to lend a hand if/when you need one.

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Hey jas, that was Dale{Fshngho} talking of hole filling...I'm still undecided how I'll attempt them, probably jb weld for most, the larger ones I'm leaning towards patching of some sort or another.....open to ideas

Hiya Snowman, I'm in Madison Heights{I75 & 12 mile area}, Thanks for the offer, will keep it in mind{plenty of space in mine lol}

Another day closer to launch :D
Started the hull stripping...wow, not as easy as the topside was...multiple layers that fought the entire way...ended up coating twice with stripper and still needed the power-washer for the majority...half done & ready for sanding, weather change coming in tonight may put things to a crawl again for a few days...they're using that four letter word again in the forecast.......snow

You had only a few shots of your work there, but man, I am certain that was some serious labor happening today! Great work buddy!

Nice shiney hull under there is what she'll say :) Keep plugging along as your making real progress. My paint took multiple stripper coats and the help of a putty knife in spots. Sanding and a stripper wheel got the rest.

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Between the weather & this dang cold I've been fighting, I may just splash around April 1st or so.......2011...Grrrr

Anywho, finally got her pretty much paint free, what's not removed now is staying...if stripper, power-washing & sanding won't remove it, it must be good.

Here's a couple of shots{sand-paper box lurking near the keel}...

Found some pitting and holes in the bottom...

minidscf1130.jpg

Can't wait to see whats under a PO's patch job{on the agenda for tomorrow}
minidscf1119.jpg

and of course some more rot/pitting on the transom skin...

Anyone tried 'All metal'? from USC{not U.S.Composites}...it's similar to jb weld I believe and contains aluminum in it's properties, sez it's waterproof and looks to go on like jb.....think I'm gonna be a guinea pig with it as the wife can get a discount thru work, stuffs like $25 a qt.

Really was a surprise to see all of this, but then again it's not on the inside, and the outside was buried beneath 4 layers minimum of paint...oh well, all ya can do is smile and move on.......Hope your all as well as can be!

I don't see anything that looks too bad. Definitely give that all metal stuff a try for that price.

Looking good Kenny. I had some small pits and one pinhole I discovered. I think thats expected on these old girls. I started keeping my time when I was stripping my boat bottom and stopped after I had waaaay to much time invested:mad:. It sure seems like you tip toed right through that part and it looks great. I was smiling ear to ear when I finally got the bottom painted:D. What colors are you going back with? Dale

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Ahhhh, feels like I'm upon the halfway point, at least most of the nasty stuff is over...actually get to see good stuff happening instead of hidden problems around every turn.

I've been experimenting with this JB-Weld/bondo like stuff called 'All Metal', it goes on like butter, but has a short three minute working window...anyways I used it to fill some some corrision area's and slight dings/dent/s.

Some may remember this little divot in the bow/keel that came with the package
minidscf1126.jpg

Well I drifted over the time limit as I was filling it and thought what the heck, glob it on and see what developes...
minidscf1145.jpg

Stuff sets up pretty quick, but I left it alone overnight...Today I hit it with some 80 grit on my orbital sander and must say I'm happy with it...now if it will hold up, remains to be seen
minidscf1155.jpg

Long story short....got the primer on the bottom, planning on painting it tomorrow. Going to flip her back onto the trailer to finish up the top side after I give the trailer a once over.
minidscf1160.jpg

Planning on smoke grey bottom & topside with white hull & possibly a royal blue highlight...something like this{playing with color-book in my photo app}

Move over George & Wheezie, I'm moving on up :D Hope your all well and living good!

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

That all metal sure did a nice job. Your primer application looks nice, thin, and even, just like it's supposed to be. I love your proposed color scheme as well.....with the small exception of bringing the gray all the way up the bow. Personally I would like it better just pretending that piece isn't there and continuing the white and blue all the way to the bow tip. And if you really are considering putting those boxes back on there, I would fully support that. I though those were cool. You could do them in a really light subtle gray. Would look sweet.

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Yeah, I've been debating bringing up the grey or not...still undecided..
Not planning on the checkerboard, just used an early photo in the app, although there's nothing wrong with it and I kinda like it, I wouldn't have no idea how or the steadiness to paint something like that and have it be presentable.

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

If they are light enough, you wouldn't have to have the world's straightest lines. I like them. They're unique to your boat. Plus they'd look cool with that racy windshield you have.

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Maybe I'll try an make a template type stencil or something and see how it goes, Would look cool in a ghost like image...worst comes to worst can always paint over it I suppose ;)
