Hey HSF,
I'm glad that my wife doesn't read this forum. She doesn't need anymore ideas.
Looks like she has you doing some nice work. Sorry man.

More cleaning, not much improvement, but will suffice until more moola rolls in for possible replacements

While at HD the other day, I bought a can of citrus strip paint stripper, thought what the heck worth a try...going to work for the rivets, and may, since it worked so well, use it on the hull instead of sanding...whatever paint types were on it sure buckled under this stuff in no time at all. Just need some better weather and a few extra hands to get her flipped and tear after it.

I think chemical stripper is definitely the way to go when you need to get a bad paint job off on one of these hulls. Otherwise you'd die sanding and sand the tops off all the rivets.

Yeah, that sanding of the rivets scare's me

More I think about it, I believe I will strip the hull with stripper...much easier for sure.

The more I look, the more battle scars {ding's & dent's} I find...good thing I've only committed to freshening this tub up...a real resto would probably send me over the edge.

That's where I am. Those dings and dents are like our scars, they tell a story good or bad. :D

I'm going to tell the story of this being used by smugglers back in the day, and the scars are from side-swiping with the coasties ..and if I don't properly repair the previous owner induced holes, I can say they were bullet markings from machine-gun spray :D

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Okay, like I posted in your old resto thread I'm late to the party again.. :p I skimmed over the 7 pages, will have to read thru thoroughly when I have more time. I really like that wood dash you're building-- that's the kind of dash I want to build for my old boat if/when I do a resto on it.

So...from glass to tin, eh? I predict that before you get done with the Starcraft, an old broken-down wood Chris Craft will catch your eye, and you'll complete the glass-tin-wood trifecta (or hat-trick, if you're a hockey fan :D).

Slow day yesterday...got her slid off the trailer

Was ready to round up some help to flip her, when it dawned on me, duh....if I flip it, strip it & paint it...then flip it back upright to strip the top & paint, chances are the stripper run-off would effect the hull paint..so needless to say, another day or so to finish stripping the top before anything else takes place.

Here, I started stripping the bow last night, but ran out of light & any desire to continue{time-wise} so I'm heading out now to git r done and hopefully flipped this evening....slowly but surely :(:)

Man, you need a bigger back yard for your boat work! You know what you could do....
...get rid of all that garden space, then you'd have plenty of room to work! (don't tell your wife I said that)

Looking good man! Hey, you have a perfect day to work on her too!

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

lol Jas, I'd have an islander here for sure at the minimum :D...am thinking tho about a lean-to off the garage, side where the arbor is...you know...start with a roof, sneak on a side or three...permit? we don't need no stinkin permit ;)

Well I didn't get her flipped today either, dang splashwell must have 4 coats, all different colors and who knows what types...Grrrrr...one more day, be just in time for the weather to change knowing my luck{lol}

Rest of the upper is looking pretty good, stripped, sanded with 220 grit, and about 614 holes to be filled...ain't life grand

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Very impressive Kenny. My backs killing me again so I am up at 2:25 am reading all your thread. Now I want to go out and work on mine again, outside, in the dark, at 35 degrees. See what you started!? Mine was a nightmare sanding and the stripper was not going to touch the bottom paint. Glad you can use it on yours, saves a ton of work. Looking on some past threads, has anyone tried Gorilla Hair to repair larger holes? Its just like Bondo but it has fiberglass hair incorperated in it. I also noticed the PO was kinda fond of silicone. Never use that with wood, it actually helps hold moisture next to wood...not good. Anyway, great stories and craftmanship, Dale

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Hey Dale, thanks for looking in...now that your thinking about getting back to work on yours, I'll get off your back and that pain should be gone :D
I've used duraglass which I believe is similar to the gorilla stuff, seemed to be fine, but I have no idea how it is going to hold up in the long run...hopefully someone will see this that has more experience with it.

Finally got the splashwell stripped and sanded, and flipped over...two of us flipped her with no problems...stood her on edge then eased her down, I lifted an end and the neighbor slid the high tech stands under her and good to go.
