Hey HopeSheFloats,
That's what I did. It's a 1/50 scale model of the Queen Mary powered by a Mercruiser 140.

Belated thanks guys

Wellll...
Finally manned up and got outside for a little playtime.
Seems as though someone else has been into this transom before, judging by the cut-out...
minidscf0973.jpg

Fun part will be these bolts & nuts down inside the corner ...maybe part of the reasoning behind the cut-out{shown above}...access?
minidscf0966.jpg

Someone wasn't shy with the silicone, most of it pulled right off with little effort
minidscf0968.jpg

Tomorrows fun....is this amount of fastening normal on these older Sc's? wow
minidscf0982.jpg

Any idea what this metal strip may of been used for? Nothing but the nuts & washers on the bottom side of the splashwell{this is the topview}...Hmmm
minidscf0969.jpg

Glad to be back on it anyways, hope everyone's shook off the winter blahs.

Yes, a few hours on mine today taking out about 50 aluminum screws just like on your transom. Your's are screws right? Mine had a rubberized tape between the splash pan and the transom. Begin paint removal tomorrow and off to Fastenal to see if I can find big flat head alum screws and flange nuts.

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Thanks McGR, feels great to be back working on the hull. Being that I'm doing my own work on this, and that fierce begins with fear, maybe this old Sea Horse isn't vibrating in the test tank but rather shaking in anticipation of the trial run to come..lol

Hey Albert, yes they're screws, or at least whats left of them from the rust fest. Not sure if mine has a rubber type seal or not yet, but under the silicone was another layer of something synthetic that is still what I would call almost tacky{to the touch}. Couple more hours of the sun warming and I'll find out{i hope}. Paint prep is next on my agenda as well..transom, stringer rivet leftovers removal then hope to pull and flip her off the trailer.

Jas...I can't find the dancing smiley...WooHoo will have to do for now{lol}... bring it on!!!

Kenny it's good to hear ya back to wrenching on the old girl:D

That is a normal amount of rivets/screws for a starcraft:eek: They built these things to last.

It's not as warm as I'd hoped yet...still waiting to see the 40s over here in Lansing.

Good luck:D

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Something about above freezing temps and sunshine makes me happy.

Figures.....beautiful day and the old gal didn't want to participate. Seems someone at sometime or another, had a brilliant idea to add some support to the splashwell. They added an aluminum angle piece the entire width of the splashwell to reinforce the original lip which had split in places...how I'm not sure, maybe fatigue due to the transom going soft. Anyways, the original had about the same amount of screw's as in the previous photo I showed, and rather than take them out they just went right over them with the new strip....needless to say I didn't figure this out for at least a hour or so. the new piece they added was rivited to the bottom of the splashwell and screwed into the transom. Logic points to removing the screws only in a transom replacement, add in the fact that they siliconed the carp out of all the seams, and whatever that synthetic stuff was below that...really made me work...finally realized once I removed that synthetic carp and seen the screws. by now I'm down to a t-shirt in part due to the weather, the rest due to fuming over this fiasco...a chisel and 6 lb hammer and back in biz...whew, sweet bejesus..

Here's a draft of what it looked like...
hiddenscrews.jpg

from there it was all seat of the pants stuff, screwed in a pair of helpers along with a chain...
minidscf0994.jpg

Threw together a lifting contraption
minidscf0995.jpg

start the lifting...
minidscf0997.jpg

add some progress keeper screws to save my place while adjusting the jack
minidscf0998.jpg

and FINALLY...

Did I mention it was a beautiful day

Good job Kenny:) I will be lifting mine out in a few weeks(outboard still attached now) so I appreciate the tips:D Great idea with the jack/2x4!

With you and jasoutside that makes the score:

Starcraft club 2
old rotten transoms 0
:D:D
BTW what is you rig rated for as far as HP?

Thanks H.A., I have no idea as there isn't a plate to be seen...figure the 115 is close to max on the low side, thinking 120 - 140 max? If I'm wrong it'll be another good reason why I let the wife do the laundry :D

Edit: just an fyi...that was a 4x4...don't want to see no-one get hurt on the off chance

Kenny I believe your rig may be a '62(BTW check out the mermaid in the ad:D)...since yours has the side rub rails and they list it as 18' 5 1/2" in the brochure. The '61 brochure shows a holiday with no side rails...but don't include a length figure:confused:.

Pretty close to your numbers though. They show the hp as 100...so your 115 will be perfect:D

No mermaid with mine, but definitely a dead fish smell under the deck {lol}.
Mine has the step pads{whatever they're called} in the middle and only one to a side, don't know how much or even if it means anything.
Either or She's mine all mine :D....gotta remember this was bought and sold in the detroit area..no telling the real story behind her ;):D

I tried pulling my transom out. FAIL. I ended up have to pry it out with a big 2x4 from the inside

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

H.A., Forgot to say thanks for the link...Thanks :)

Jas, thanks, but not as cool as using tree's ;)

EZ, it wasn't easy{lol}, I had the benefit of good wood everywhere except the thru hole areas. The main hang-up area for me was the corners...had to slightly pry the gunwales outward{a smidgen} as the transom extended a hair width past/beneath them. I think the cherry picker would of been great with this job over-all{more reach} but it's back at my brothers place.
All in all, probably 4 hour job including cleaning up tools etc. afterwords...dang hidden screw's being the major time stretcher.

Man is my body aching today, way too lazy this past winter. Today, going to take it easy and clean the shop in prep for the transom rebuild...surprising how trashed it can get in just a day or two of playing.

Hi Bear, thanks for dropping in and checking her out. I appreciate the compliments, but my work pales in comparison to a lot of others I've seen here at iboats...gotta luv the inspiration they supply :D
