Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Once again you have an ambitious set of goals for the weekend, good luck.

Thanks Glen! May be ambitious but rubbish.... I do have an ace up my sleeves.... the family is heading up north for the weekend leaving me to finish the boat. Gotta deliver or face the wrath of the Admiral!

EZ - I like how he just throws this one in here as a simple line item like "installing a stern light" or something

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Ok fella's in the home stretch now....

Polished the rub rail metal part and pulled out the old white rubber rub rail parts. Polished up the bow cap and managed to sand the whole boat including some of the patches of some PO holes made. I also vacuumed the whole boat.

I also put another coat of spar on the rear sun deck --- 5 coats in all just to make sure it was sealed tight.

Plan is to mask off the boat either this eve or more than likely tomorrow morn and spray. Etch. Prime. Paint.

Anyone recall --- I think you can etch, prime and paint without leaving the etch or the primer set for more than an hour --- sorta flash dry then apply the next coat so to speak. I think this is what I did on the Jupiter and the paint held up terrific --- even with 2 dogs clawing at it and 2 kids jumping in and out! Just re-read that part of the thread and I couldn't find any text that says I did or not!!

Thoughts guys???

Thanks,

Jim

Did ya get the stern light mounted?

I don't remember what you did, but I think the primer needs some sanding before the paint.

Sanding the primer is a matter of how clean it looks. If it has the orange peal look it should get a little wet sand.

Best of luck, hoping Murphy is visiting someone in the lower 48. :)

GA \ 64 --- You guys are the best!! That's it. With the Jup, I forgot to sand the primer. Turned out fine... but good to remember.

And Ga... the stern light is in. You can sleep well again tonight! :)

Fella's ---- picked up the paint supplies... the fun begins tomorrow! Temps are supposed to stay below 100F with the humidex tomorrow... so I will be out early to get things taped off and sealed then etched and primed.

Ok fellas.... she's painted.

Rub rail is installed.

All wrapped up right now having a "drying rest"....

An unveiling to come once she's dry...

Ok... Ok.... I know... no pics no done....

Rattle cans for the etch and primer... HVLP for the black. 25% acetone to get the sprayer to work well.

Ok... Pics of the boat...

Before all wrapped up:

After bowwise:

After Looking sternwise: Note: the semi painted silver on the rub rails is duct tape!

Came out pretty decent. Only area that is not is at the stern where it was pitted due to the PO having a piece of PT plywood.

Two options: Leave it and have it look like pitted pavement... or I can spar up a nice piece of wood and screw it and glue it over the whole area. Give that the next owner will be keeping it garaged I am not concerned about rot. It really comes down to looks at this point. So... my vote is for the hunk O' wood.... anyone got any semi-convincing arguments against??? :)

Have a great evening fellas.

O Ya... also polished the windscreen frame... so tomorrow all I can do that is left is polish the windscreen and the rear board can be cut and sparred...

Crazy that it is that close. A morning is really what is left to put the bits back on and install the windscreen. Then just motor install and trailer paint in two weeks!

Pheeeew!

All of that light wood is going to pop off of that black! sharp!

Is hunk'o aluminum out of the question?

Looks great. Can't wait to see it out of the garage all finished.
Don't forget to make a video of its first splash.

Not sure what area you said was pitted. Gunwale or transom? Some nice shiny aluminum diamond plate would look amazing next to the great woodwork and shiny black paint.

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Hey guys thanks a bunch!!!

Here are some post taking all the wrap off pics...

What is doesn't show is that I cut the line of paint on the sides just above the splash thing (forgotten the name... heat stroke I think!). Using the green frog tape really worked fantastically!

I think the Falcon in the background of the last picture was just a little jealous... :)

Have a great "HOT" day!!

Off to finish the windscreen and cut and spar the transom board.

Gonna wait a couple of days before putting all the hardware on the paint --- to tacky still and it is just to hot and sticky to dry fast right now.

Much better with with the masking gone, Jim. Black and natural wood! :thumb:

Is it the chine you masked below? The splash thing?
