Alrighty Gents... a pictoral update for your viewing pleasure.... :)

So got rolling on the getting the foam in today. Due to my pea sized brain, I immediately ran into 2 issues:

1. The Z channel I had made up that increased in height from 2" to 9" in a linear fashion should have gone from 2" to 6" (only measured once....) and...
2. The Z channel should not have increased in a linear fashion for the last 5 1/2 feet of the boat!

So... from just under the dash backwards it goes from 6" down to approx. 2 3/4" over 6 feet. Then it goes from 3 inches to 2 inches for the next 6 feet --- there is about a 6" overlap. So... Ya... goofed.

However.... I did manage to redeam myself! So I had 2 6 foot sections. One of the sections actually worked quite well:

So I riveted it in place. Then I marked up the oversized piece...

So then I had to build a brake to bend it... hmmm... well the brake was more "woodshed" quality then shop quality. Man I wish I had the materials to build it properly! Any suggestions for future would be great!!!

So here is the woodshed quality brake...

Continued...

So then I screwed a 2x6 to it....

Using only the finest metal crafting tools --- a sledge hammer, block of lead, vise, hammer and me... I worked on perfecting the bend! (Yah... it went as you might expect!... slightly lumpy)

Once it was ummmm.... perfect :), I installed it (partially --- ran out of time)...

So there you have it... a proper update with proper photo's of some questionably proper work! :)

Have a great day fellas!

IM - Looks great from here. Once the sole (deck) is on it's a non issue. Someone might notice 50 years from now.:)

Proper progress to a proper rebuild:D bin there done that. But I usually do something stupid like clamp it to the freshly painted frame rail on a trailer:facepalm:

Ah yes, bottom feeder metal bending. I built a brake out of some 2X4s and piano hinges once. It still wouldn't do a nice crisp bend, but the results were, well it was bent.

Yours ain't too bad, Jim. :)

Thanks GA.... As 64 commented on... only someone long after I am gone will wonder what kind of a tin head bent that aluminum!!!

I think we think that even when opening up an unmolested factory boat. For example, couldn't Starcraft find any shorter screws to use to hold the darn things together? Seems like they got a bargain at a surplus sale in the screw section. ;)

every time i worry about my workmanship, i think of what factory built wonderfulness i've found when tearing apart the boats.....like, you'd think they could at least get someone as good with a jigsaw as me (this is NOT a high bar.....) to cut out the floorboards

Isn't that the truth, some of the cuts I found looked real bad.

New Starcraft employee's first job - cut floors because carpet/vinyl covers the bob-boos. Second job - stuff dashboards in the hull so they can't be removed. They never did hire anyone to apply protection to plywood, we're lucky it lasted as long as it did.

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

you know the bottom of my chief was not fully even... they modded the port stringer to be shorter by adding a curve...
I thought it got bent due to rotten floors and made it nice and flat!
When putting the floor in I found out what happened...

something my grandpa would tell me at that point "You're building a boat not a piano" :p
