I use the double rule. i.e. If the shank of my screw/bolt is 1/4' then I drill a 1/2" hole.

Ok..Im confused about this one .. I think you might be talking about a "process" other then a pilot hole.. ??

Ok, I have those bits, but thought they wouldn't do a clean enough job, but I'm sure they'll be fine. I'm mounting my outboard, I think the bolts are 1/2" bolts. So drill to 1" then fill with PB then redrill?

NO !! Im not sure he means that.. dont drill out a 1" hole for a 1/2" bolt .. one size or two sizes over yes..just enough so you can dry fit your bolt without having to turn it ( You dont turn caulked bolts from the outside..only turn the nuts from the inside ).

You got it!!!

Im sure he will be back.. I think he mistyped ..

You got it!!! You KNOW you can sharpen them with a flat file!!!!;)

Thanks! And yep! Mine are pretty new, they should be ok.

Just went and got a aluminum transom cap made, they cut it and bent it up for me right then and there. Sweet!

No, what I'm doing is drilling a 1" hole, then completely filling it with PB, then re-drilling to the correct 1/2" size, that way I'm then only going through PB, and the bare plywood will not be exposed.

LOL! Thanks, I guess. I didn't do it for looks though, just wanted one solid piece that fit really well. The old one was two halves that slipped together and held by screws. No screws will be going through the transom! 4200 it will be.

Are you using epoxy PB to fill your holes or Poly PB? Even with fibers added poly may fracture and let water in. The downside to thickened poly is that there can be heat build up in thick applications. Too much heat breaks down the resin and you can get premature fracturing over time. Poly can also shrink and pull away from your sealing surfaces. Eventhough you are filling and drilling the penetrations, I recoomend you use some 5200 when you install your bolts.
Epoxy may be a better choice in this method.

Also. What do you guys recommend for a bilge drain? My dad got me one that is bronze, but it only goes on from the outside, and doesn't go all the way through, how to seal the transom after drilling it out?

Got the oversized holes drilled for the motor. Tomorrow hopefully fill them with PB. Got the seats put together and just sitting in there. Need to PB some blocks to the deck to screw the seats too, so I don't have to puncture the deck.

PW,

I been thinkin about your oversized holes and EZ has a point. I TRULY believe you should use Thickened EPOXY to fill the holes. Poly DOES have a tendency to crack even with fibers and it will shrink. EPOXY does NOT do that. Get some expoxy for your holes. I'll sleep better at night if you do.

Ok, I'll see what it costs. Even on a 1" hole? I could see a shrink on a large fill area, but 1" isn't that big an area to fill with Poly?

Hey just get some of this at the hardware store and mix some cabosil and fibers with it. 10 bucks and you're good to go

Cool, I'll check it out. I also have to fill the bilge hole when I drill it as well as the splash well drain hole, figure might as well do those the same was as well.
