Hello Parris,

Great Job on your restore!

I've just started a deck/ transom repair on my bass boat and this thread has been very helpful! Thanks for being so descriptive of all the little details. I've never worked with glass before and I've learned a lot from following your progress here. The job doesn't look quite as daunting anymore!

Best wishes!

How big of a hole are you going to be drilling for the drain plug ? .. hopefully not 2" ;) .

I do understand the theory of oversize holes filled and drilled...I just never seen it used.

Unless you plan on using penetrating epoxy on the holes I dont think you gain anything.

You normally install trans bolts with 5200 .. the 5200 seals the wood/bolt surface.

Now what your doing is sealing wood/pb/bolt surfaces . Im sure the 5200 PB/bolt seal will be fine..Its the wood/PB seal/bond that I would be worried about.

If the PB fails at any point you will have risk of water exposure. PB has NO compression factor and under load might Crack.

Im sure you will be fine with this install.. Its just food for thought and only My personal opinion. :)

Thanks. I have no idea yet on the drain plug hole size. How do I effectivly seal the inside of the hole for the drain plug? The plug I got is a bronze one that screws in from the outside, so once I drill the hole there will be exposed wood on the inside of the hole? So your saying I should coat the inside of the holes with epoxy?

Just had a thought! What if I epoxy or 5200 some aluminum round stock into the 1" holes, that way the wood is, and then use 4200 through the bolt holes, and if you ever remove the bolts the aluminum round stock "slug" stay's intact! Sounds like it'll work to me.

If you want to go the suggestion of 2/1 hole size..then back fill with PB on your 1" drain plug ( thats a 2" hole..then backfilled with PB !! ) .

Install your drain plug like anyone else..

Drill your 1" .. dry fit .. put some 5200 fast cure on your finger and smear around your hole... Over 5200 the crap outa it to where you have a big blob..secure..and clean.. DONE..

That oversize hole drilling is ..erm..

Yes, I most definitely wont be drilling a 2" hole for the drain. What about sealing the drain hole though? The drain doesn't go all the way through the 1" hole in the transom, it just sits on the outside.

Ok, will do. I haven't got it yet. My dad has it, he picked up a bunch of stuff for me, since he works in the marine buizz, he's getting it cheap. I'll have it tomorrow.

So I stopped by the store on the way home from work today, they bled me dry a little more. Got a quart of epoxy for filling the holes, some Interlux bilge coat, and some Interdeck, both in gray.

Hey Wood, I believe it is this style of drain.

What if you epoxied a pvc tube into the transom that leads to this drain plug.

Thats what I thought you were talking about. It's called a Garboard Drain. You are SPOT ON in your thinking. That's exactly my recommendation. 1" PVC 5200'd into the transom then 5200 the Drain in. She'll be good to go. TIP: If you have a Tap & Die I'd drill a hole in the plug and put a brass chain on the plug and attach it to the transom with a Screw. Of course Epoxied. That way you'll never loose the plug

Thanks Wood! Great minds think alike!! My dad is coming over tomorrow to help me do some electrical work, I always enjoy time working with my Dad!

I think 1" pvc has an OD of 1 1/4" .. Garboards have 1" OD install ..

What about installing the Moeller style drain tube on the inside with 5200..and the Garboard on the outside ??

I would keep an extra plug on the boat in your "boat box" just in case .. ;) .

YD has a good Point. That would be a better solution and would allow the standard boat plugs to work.
Also having an inside plug would be a good thing to have just in case!

Re: 1965 Johnson Tri-Hull restore!

Well, my dad came over this morning, man its nice to have his help, he got me soo much stuff for next to nothing, he usually is working on like 75' yachts wiring them up, so he managed to save whats considered small pieces of wire left over!! LOL, which run the length of my boat!!!! Got allot done, most of the wiring is done, and run, just need to tie wrap it all into place and do a few more connections. While he was wiring I was making a battery box mount for up in the bow, and a mount in the stern for the battery power post mount and a place to mount the fuel filter, got the motor mount holes filled with thickened epoxy, I first wett'd out the holes with non thickened epoxy then fill with thickened stuff. I'm well on my way!! I'll grab some pics soon.

Ya! I'll try to post up some pics tonight of the electrical we've done so far. Looks like a tornado went through my boat right now.

Here are some pics. All of the wiring is Marine tinned wire, and marine connectors.

All the switches control the circuits on the fuse panel, that way I can turn on and off as I need, lights, ect... The bilge pump is controlled by a 3 pos switch, down is auto, which is run off the float switch, middle is off, and momentary up in on, if I need to manually switch it on, and its a momentary on so you don't forget and leave it running.

And before anyone gives me crap about the stereo installed off center, it has to be that way due to a large bulkhead support in the cap. Got the stereo in today, still have to wire it though.
